Authorities in Washington D.C. are investigating the mysterious appearance of the numbers “8647” etched into the grass at the National Mall. The discovery has raised eyebrows, particularly as the numbers have been previously associated with anti-Trump sentiments. The incident occurred on June 11, as the capital gears up for the 250th anniversary celebrations of America’s independence.

Aerial photographs obtained by Reuters reveal the sequence “8647” prominently displayed in discoloured patches of grass. Onlookers have noted that while the number “8” is relatively clear, the subsequent figures “6”, “4”, and “7” are less distinct, especially the “4”, which has suffered significant discolouration. The exact method by which these numbers were inscribed remains unclear.
The U.S. Park Police reported receiving a notification about the markings around 11:30 AM on the day of the discovery. National Guard members were also dispatched to the site following the report. In an official statement, the Park Police indicated that the cause of the grass discolouration has yet to be determined, but samples have been collected for further analysis as the investigation proceeds.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of the Interior, which oversees national parks including the National Mall, condemned the incident, labelling it “deranged vandalism”. The Department emphasised that any threat against the President is treated with utmost seriousness and that the ongoing investigation aims to identify those responsible for the incident.
The timing of the discovery is particularly sensitive, given the imminent festivities surrounding America’s 250th birthday. The National Mall is slated to host a 16-day “Great American State Fair” starting June 25, which could draw significant attention to the area. Additionally, this incident comes shortly after a $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was completed, an effort that falls under the administration’s broader initiative to enhance national landmarks in anticipation of the anniversary celebrations.
The numbers “8647” may have deeper implications with regard to former President Donald Trump, who will turn 80 on June 14. Within certain circles, “86” is code used in the hospitality industry to indicate the removal of an item, while “47” has been interpreted by some as a reference to Trump being the 47th President of the United States.
The number gained notoriety in May 2025 when former FBI Director James Comey faced scrutiny after posting an Instagram photo of seashells arranged to recreate “8647”. He later removed the post, explaining that he had stumbled across the arrangement during a beach walk and did not understand the violent undertones associated with the numbers.
The incident elicited reactions from several of Trump’s senior officials, including Kristi Noem and Kash Patel, who suggested that Comey’s post represented a threat against the former President. This public discourse around the numbers further adds to the complexity of the situation, making it a focal point for differing interpretations and underlying tensions related to Trump.
As the investigation unfolds, the U.S. Park Police and other relevant authorities are working to ensure that such events do not overshadow the upcoming celebrations. The National Mall, as a historical site of significance, is under close scrutiny to preserve its integrity amid growing concerns over potential acts of vandalism or politically motivated messages.
As Washington D.C. prepares for a momentous anniversary, officials continue to call for accountability and underscore the importance of maintaining respect for national symbols and landmarks. The outcome of this investigation may set important precedents for how similar incidents are treated in the future, particularly in an era marked by divisive political rhetoric.
