Lyrik Mendivil, a 21-year-old from Arizona, has shared her inspiring health journey with over 400,000 followers on TikTok. Despite facing overwhelming challenges, including surviving stage 4 kidney cancer in childhood, Lyrik now battles severe heart failure and advanced lung disease. Her story is one of resilience and determination, resonating with many who follow her on social media.

Lyrik’s health issues began even before her birth on May 24, 2005, as she carried a cancerous tumour undetected. It wasn’t until she was about two years old that her family noticed troubling symptoms, such as blood in her urine. Unfortunately, multiple hospitals failed to diagnose her condition until they discovered she had Stage 4 Diffuse Anaplastic Wilms tumour, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting children. This marked the beginning of a medical ordeal that few adults could imagine enduring, let alone a toddler.
Undergoing extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Lyrik had her right kidney and adrenal gland removed in an attempt to save her life. Reflecting on her experiences, she acknowledges the severity of her pain, which felt unjust for someone so young. “I was experiencing such pain and discomfort that some never face in 70 years of life,” she recalls.
Despite successfully overcoming cancer, Lyrik’s health complications did not end. She developed dilated cardiomyopathy, which later progressed to severe heart failure and advanced lung disease. Today, she finds herself in a hospital, awaiting a heart and double-lung transplant—a reality she describes as shattering. “Once they finally told me, my world was shattered,” she admits, revealing the emotional toll these medical challenges have taken on her life.
While many young adults her age focus on achieving milestones such as graduating from high school or preparing for university, Lyrik faces the daily complexities of chronic illness. Major life events, including prom and graduation, were overshadowed by her declining health, which often left her feeling robbed of her childhood. She recalls how her senior gym teacher even attempted to fail her because she couldn’t keep up with her peers, despite having medical accommodations.
Lyrik’s typical day now revolves around medication, IV infusions, and constant medical monitoring. She follows strict fluid and sodium restrictions and struggles with nausea that complicates her ability to eat and drink. “I just wish I could walk around for more than five seconds without getting winded or feeling like I’m about to pass out,” she shares. The loss of a normal life is profoundly felt, particularly the future she had once envisioned for herself.
Despite these challenges, Lyrik has managed to connect with others through her social media presence. Initially sharing her experience on TikTok as a means of coping, she has built a supportive community. What began as a personal outlet has transformed into a platform where viewers resonate with her journey. She expresses gratitude for the encouragement she receives from followers, many of whom thank her for her honesty and openness.
“Having so many people say I brighten their day is insane,” Lyrik reflects, acknowledging the unexpected love and support she has received. Some followers create artwork in her honour, and others share their own stories of resilience, which motivates her to continue.
As she remains in limbo, waiting for a call that could change her life through a much-needed transplant, Lyrik maintains her focus on the future. If granted a new heart and lungs, her foremost wish is simple: to walk around again with ease. Family plays a pivotal role in her resolve, especially as she witnesses the profound grief of loved ones who have faced similar health battles. Her desire to avoid bringing heartbreak to her family fuels her determination to persist.
With a strong message underscoring her journey, Lyrik hopes that her story encourages others to persevere, regardless of the challenges they face. “As cliché as it sounds, it’s just to not ever give up on yourself,” she states, reiterating her gratitude for the community of supporters who have come to cheer her on in her fight for a brighter future.
