At 28 years old, Dillard, a newcomer to Bravo’s “Summer House”, expressed his surprise at the significant impact his openness has had on others. He acknowledged the vital role that reality television plays in shaping public perceptions. Following a mental health crisis last autumn, he found it difficult to find the appropriate therapeutic support, stating, “It was hard for me to find a platform that had the tools for me to succeed.” Dillard believes that had Rula been available to him during his struggles, it would have made a significant difference.

While he understands the considerable barriers preventing men from seeking mental health treatment, Dillard urges men to not let pride hinder their well-being. He remarked, “We think it’s not tough to talk about our feelings,” highlighting the need for men to be more open. By sharing his own experiences, he hopes to encourage others to acknowledge their feelings and embark on their own healing journeys.

Dillard’s vulnerability during “Summer House” has reinforced his connection with fans. He spoke candidly about his anxiety throughout the show, culminating in a reunion episode where he disclosed his hospitalisation for a week and subsequent diagnosis of BPD. This revelation has resonated deeply with viewers, with many thanking him for his honesty. He reflected on the powerful responses he has received, sharing, “People will literally message me and say that I saved their life,” which astonished him given he was simply being truthful about his own experiences.
Taking on the mantle of being a spokesperson for men’s mental health, Dillard expressed gratitude for the support he has received. He did not anticipate such a widespread response but believes it could inspire others to share their own truths. Dillard noted that many have asked how he can speak so openly, to which he replied that his commitment to helping others is paramount. He stated, “I don’t mind sharing my truth and my story as long as I know that it’s going to help other people.”
Despite his newfound visibility, Dillard remains conscious of his own journey of healing, noting that recovery is a continuous process requiring daily effort. His experiences on the show have been buoyed by the support of his co-stars, particularly Carl Radke, Ciara Miller, and Mia Calabrese. Dillard expressed profound appreciation for their friendship and support during his recovery, attributing much of his progress to their encouragement and understanding.
Fostering true friendships within the reality TV context, Dillard emphasised that genuine relationships can flourish if nurtured. He recounted how Radke, who has his own mental health journey, has been a crucial source of mentorship for him. Dillard affectionately referred to Radke as a brother and highlighted the importance of the support he has received from all his co-stars.
When asked about a potential return to the share house in the Hamptons, Dillard expressed enthusiasm but insisted on returning on his terms. Reflecting on his previous season, he admitted that he had tried to conform to an image that did not represent him. Now, he is determined to bring his authentic self to the experience, stating, “I’m bringing me to the Hamptons … as is.”
As Dillard continues his advocacy for mental health and strives to share his truth, he remains committed to helping others navigate their own challenges. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of openness and support in the often-stigmatised discussion of men’s mental health.
