The family of James “Weston” Higginbotham, a student at Auburn University, is mourning their loss following the tragic death of their son during a family holiday in Japan. Weston, who was 20 years old, is being remembered fondly by his family as a loving individual with a deep appreciation for nature and an adventurous spirit. In an effort to honour his memory, the Higginbotham family has announced the establishment of a scholarship in his name at Auburn University.

Nancy Higginbotham, Weston’s mother, took to social media to express her grief and share cherished anecdotes about her late son. Describing him as a devoted vegan who was passionate about environmental issues and sustainability, Nancy wrote about Weston’s adventurous nature. His hobbies included skiing, mountain biking, and hiking across various iconic landscapes such as Yosemite, the Pyrenees Mountains, the Camino de Santiago, and the Swiss Alps. “If there was sunshine and outdoor adventure to be had, he was there,” she recalled.
Weston had embarked on the trip to Japan with his family to commemorate his younger brother Grayton’s recent high school graduation. The family arrived in Japan on May 22, with plans to explore the cultural treasures of Kyoto. However, on the evening of May 29, following a disagreement with his mother regarding trip planning, Weston chose to venture out on his own. He was last known to have exited a train at Yamashina station in Kyoto around 8:15 PM local time.
After Weston’s departure, his family experienced difficulties in contacting him, as messages and calls went unanswered. Tragically, after several days of searching, Nancy announced that her son’s body was discovered by a volunteer search-and-rescue group in a remote mountainous area near Kyoto on June 6. The cause of death has yet to be established, although authorities have indicated that foul play is not suspected.
In her heartfelt tribute to Weston, Nancy noted the close bond he shared with Grayton. She expressed admiration for how Weston included his younger brother in activities and interests, fostering a supportive relationship that transcended the typical sibling dynamic. “Weston didn’t treat Grayton as an annoying younger brother but instead included him in his friend group,” she wrote.
Weston’s love for music and his adventurous pursuits shone through his various involvement at Auburn University. He was studying biosystems engineering with a particular focus on sustainability and was actively engaged with the university’s research department. A member of the school’s climbing and triathlon teams, Weston had also made plans to travel to Bolivia this August to oversee a water distribution project aimed at assisting a local village.
The impact Weston had on those around him was profound, as Nancy highlighted the kindness and respect he demonstrated to all, regardless of their background. His inclusive nature allowed him to forge friendships across diverse communities, demonstrating a genuine love for people. “People who met Weston loved him and he loved them right back,” she reflected. This initiative reflects their desire to promote the values Weston cherished during his life.
A visitation and funeral service for Weston are scheduled for June 17 in Birmingham, Alabama, which will allow friends and family to gather in remembrance of his vibrant spirit. In her tribute, Nancy provided a poignant message, encouraging others to honour Weston by embracing the things he loved: taking a walk in nature, enjoying a vegan meal, admiring the sunset, expressing love to those close to them, and reducing the noise in their lives.
