A 41-year-old federal government employee from the United States, Enrique Madden, has shared his unexpected experience of being diagnosed with shingles, a condition he previously associated only with older adults. In a poignant reflection, he emphasised the importance of not dismissing unusual rashes, encouraging others to seek immediate medical attention.

Initially, Madden believed that the painful rash on his back was merely a harmless bug bite, something he attributed to his work at a community farm, where he frequently handles fruits and vegetables. Following a typical Thursday evening at the gym, he first noticed the rash and applied a prescription steroid cream he used for eczema, expecting it to resolve naturally. However, as pain intensified and the rash became more pronounced, he began to reconsider his diagnosis.
“I thought of shingles as something that only affected elderly individuals,” Madden said. The misunderstanding was deepened by the frequent vaccine commercials featuring older people, further distancing him from the condition. Feeling increasingly uncomfortable, he documented the rash and turned to artificial intelligence for answers, prompting some unusual conversations.
Madden uploaded images of his rash to the AI chatbot Claude, which suggested shingles as a potential diagnosis. Initially, he dismissed this advice as implausible. Seeking a second opinion, he consulted ChatGPT, but to his surprise, received the same response. Despite his scepticism, the worsening condition was beginning to alarm him.
Eventually, it was his mother’s intervention that catalysed his decision to seek medical help. With a doctorate in public health, she recognised the seriousness of the situation at a glance. “You need to go to urgent care now; that looks like shingles,” she told him decisively. Affectionately advising him to heed her expertise, Enrique finally acted on her guidance.
After visiting urgent care, his condition was confirmed as shingles within 24 hours. Doctors explained that although the illness is often linked to older adults, anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk, as the virus can reactivate later in life. Notably, both the urgent care physician and his primary care doctor highlighted the necessity of timely treatment. They reiterated that antiviral medication is most effective when started within the first 72 hours—a crucial factor that shapes the outcome of the condition.
Since disclosing his experience on TikTok, Madden has garnered a wave of responses from individuals who have encountered shingles themselves, many of whom were far younger than he had presumed. “I received messages from people who had it as kids, teenagers, and even in their twenties and thirties,” he remarked, challenging the stereotype that shingles predominantly affects seniors.
As he recovers from the illness, Madden hopes to steer others away from the same misconceptions. His message is unequivocal: “If anything unusual appears on your skin, do not wait to get it checked out.” He stresses that the difference between a manageable recovery and a severe experience can be significant, echoing the saying, “better safe than sorry.”
Madden’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of health and the importance of vigilance. His newfound awareness of shingles reflects a vital conversation about misconceptions surrounding age and illness. By sharing his story, Madden aims not only to educate but also to inspire others to trust their instincts and prioritise their health.
