Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla will make her debut with Disney as part of the much-anticipated Toy Story 5, which is set to be released on 19 June. At just 24, Tyla is excited to lend her voice to a new character, the Inflatable Flamingo, in a specially tailored version of the film aimed at audiences in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Inflatable Flamingo is described as a lively and humorous pool accessory who strikes up an unexpected friendship with the beloved Toy Story characters during their new adventure. This latest chapter in the iconic franchise will see Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang navigating a rapidly evolving world where traditional toys face competition from modern technology.

In a video shared on Disney Africa’s Instagram account, Tyla expressed her enthusiasm for joining the Toy Story franchise, emphasising her long-standing admiration for the series. “When I was asked to join the cast of Toy Story 5, I was so excited. I just couldn’t believe that the offer was even presented to me,” she said, showing fans a glimpse of her experience in the recording booth.
Tyla also revealed her fond memories of the Toy Story films, stating, “I grew up watching Toy Story. It’s such a big movie in my family; my parents love it — my whole family loves it. Now, we are going to watch and hear a little bit of my voice in it.” Her personal connection to the franchise makes this role especially meaningful for the young artist.
Interestingly, the casting announcement comes after Tyla’s playful tweet in 2023, where she had humorously reached out to Disney, writing, “Disney, hmu when you free,” alongside a princess emoji. It seems her wish has been granted in what is becoming a landmark year for her career.
This partnership with Disney marks Tyla’s second venture into the animation world. Earlier in 2023, she contributed a track titled “Everything Goes with Blue” for the soundtrack of the upcoming Smurfs movie, showcasing her versatility as an artist.
Toy Story 5 boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring returning stars such as Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Notably, the film will also introduce fresh voices, including Greta Lee as Lilypad, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, and Craig Robinson as Atlas. Additionally, Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Duke Caboom, with Tony Hale returning as Forky.
Global music sensation Bad Bunny is another high-profile addition to the cast, taking on the role of Pizza with Sunglasses. Furthermore, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has penned an original song for the film, titled “I Knew It, I Knew You,” adding to the excitement surrounding the soundtrack.
As fans eagerly await the film’s release, Tyla’s involvement in Toy Story 5 not only marks a significant milestone in her career but also highlights the importance of representation in global cinema. Disney’s decision to create a unique version of the film for Sub-Saharan audiences reflects a growing trend in adapting content to better resonate with diverse communities.
Toy Story 5 is poised to capture the hearts of both new and old fans when it arrives in cinemas this June, and Tyla’s voice will undoubtedly add a delightful new dimension to this beloved franchise.
