Amy Schumer has opened up about the challenges of living with endometriosis, a painful condition that affects many women worldwide. In a recent Instagram post, the 45-year-old actress shared critical facts about the illness, emphasising the urgent need for more research and attention to this often-misunderstood disease.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it. The World Health Organisation estimates that this affliction impacts approximately 190 million women globally. Despite its widespread prevalence, Schumer pointed out that the average delay in diagnosis can be as much as seven to ten years, making it imperative for the medical community to prioritise this issue.
In her social media post, Schumer outlined some startling facts, noting, “Endometriosis affects 10% of women.” She further elaborated that the condition can proliferate to nearly any organ in the body and can even create its own nerve pathways, which could lead to excruciating pain. “These facts are devastating,” she remarked, highlighting the resilience required to endure such a debilitating ailment.
Schumer, who has been living with endometriosis since the birth of her son, Gene, in 2019, reflected on her personal journey during a speech at the 13th Annual Endometriosis Foundation of America’s Blossom Ball in May 2025. During this period of pain that she described as “invisible,” she sought a diagnosis that would explain her suffering.
It was only following the birth of her child that doctors confirmed her conditions of endometriosis and adenomyosis, which occurs when tissue like that in the uterus grows into its own wall. Once diagnosed, Schumer was referred to Dr. Tamer Seckin, a renowned expert and the founder of the advocacy group EndoFound. The diagnosis was a significant turning point for her, as it offered validation and understanding about her health struggles.
Reflecting on her initial consultation with Dr. Seckin, Schumer recalled, “It was a unique experience to have the proof for the first time.” She was shown the multiple adhesions on her body caused by the condition, which included her appendix being constricted by endometrial tissue. The emotional weight of receiving this validation was profound, and she described herself as “weeping” during the visit.
In addition to the emotional relief, Schumer had been dealing with physical symptoms, including “chocolate cysts” filled with old blood in her ovaries. Remarkably, she noted that it was fortunate she had been able to conceive, considering the severity and extent of her endometriosis.
After enduring years of immense discomfort, Schumer opted for surgical intervention in September 2021, undergoing both a hysterectomy and an appendectomy as part of her treatment protocol. Today, she reports being “pain-free for about five or six years,” a significant change from her previous daily struggle.
Schumer’s candid discussion of her experiences with endometriosis is timely, as it draws attention to the need for increased awareness and support for both patients and researchers. The need for more funding and studies to understand this condition is critical to improving the quality of life for countless women who often suffer in silence.
In a world where many health issues still lack recognition, Schumer’s initiative to share her journey and the facts surrounding endometriosis is not just informative but a call to action. Her hope is for greater understanding and compassion towards those affected, underscoring the importance of making strides in medical research and care to help alleviate the burden of this condition.
As celebrities like Schumer bring personal stories to the forefront, it contributes significantly to breaking down the stigma surrounding women’s health issues. Such narratives can encourage others to seek help, share their experiences, and advocate for change. Through her platform, Schumer not only shares her pain but also serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for many women experiencing similar struggles.
