In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Jasmine Ramirez, a 14-year-old from Bradenton, Florida, recently graduated from Braden River Middle School, just months after undergoing a critical leg amputation. This significant achievement came on May 27, 2023, and marks a new chapter in her life, one that she feared might not be possible only a short while ago.
Jasmine’s journey has been challenging, largely due to a rare medical condition that caused her left leg to balloon to an astonishing weight of 174 lbs. This condition not only affected her mobility but also led to severe health complications. In early 2023, Jasmine developed a serious infection in the affected limb, prompting doctors to conclude that amputation was her best option for survival. Following a nearly 17-hour surgical procedure to remove the leg, which also harboured a large tumour, a new journey towards recovery began.

Reflecting on her experience, Jasmine shared her mixed feelings regarding the amputation. “I have a regret that I shouldn’t have amputated my leg, but at the same time, I’m kind of glad that I did, because if I didn’t, it was going to take my life,” she admitted. This sense of relief has gradually replaced her initial apprehension, embracing life with renewed hope.

Despite the significant challenges faced, Jasmine managed to walk across the graduation stage. She expressed her delight and surprise at reaching this milestone, stating, “To be honest, I thought I wasn’t going to make it, but I did. I’m glad that I graduated and that I’m going to go to high school and meet some new people and make some new friends.” Her words resonate with the joy many feel when graduating, but they also reflect a deeper journey marked by substantial hardship.
Following the amputation, Jasmine faced difficulties with her self-image, feeling like a “monster” as she tried to adapt to her new reality. However, she noted that she has come to terms with her situation and focuses on her future. “They can look at me, they can point at me, whatever they want, and I’m just not going to care,” Jasmine declared, highlighting her growing self-acceptance.
Looking ahead, Jasmine is excited about the opportunities that await her. She expressed aspirations to complete her high school education, attend university, and eventually pursue a career in theatre, with a dream of performing on Broadway. Her ambitions reflect a determination to live life fully despite the obstacles she has faced.
To support her ongoing recovery, a GoFundMe campaign has been organised by family friends. This initiative aims to assist Jasmine in covering medical expenses, including doctor appointments and therapy sessions, many of which require travel over considerable distances. The fund will also help facilitate the procurement of a prosthetic limb, an essential aid for her future mobility and independence.
Anastashia Carrasquillo, the campaign organiser, emphasised the need for donations to support Jasmine as she navigates this significant transition. “As she adapts to her new life, she will still need to continue seeing doctors and attending therapy multiple days a week, including multiple trips out of town—some several hours away,” she explained, underscoring the complex needs involved in Jasmine’s recovery.
Jasmine Ramirez’s story is one of perseverance and hope, showcasing that even in the face of dire circumstances, the human spirit can triumph. As she steps into this new phase of life, her journey serves as an inspiration not just to her peers but to everyone facing their own challenges. With the support of her community and her indomitable spirit, Jasmine continues to look forward to a bright and fulfilling future.
