Cumberland High School in Illinois has achieved a rare and remarkable milestone in its most recent graduation ceremony, which took place on 17 May. Out of a modest graduating class of 72 students, five sets of twins were present, accounting for approximately 14% of the cohort. This impressive statistic has drawn attention to the small community nestled just northwest of Greenup, where population numbers hover around 1,300.

The school’s principal, Daniel Huffman, expressed his surprise at this unique occurrence. “When we were considering how many guests were likely to attend graduation, we realised that ten of these students were from shared families, which contributed to the significant turnout,” he quipped. Huffman’s light-hearted remarks reflect not just the peculiar coincidence but also the tight-knit nature of this rural community.
The twins, graduating together, reminisced about their shared experiences throughout their school years. Trey Lewis, one of the graduating twins, noted that the concentration of twins in the school was indeed worth mentioning. “We don’t really think about it often, but to have five sets of us in a small town like this is quite impressive,” he remarked. Such sentiments were echoed by many as they celebrated this joyful occasion together.

Among the twins, identical twins Rylan and Camden James recalled a particularly mischievous moment from their kindergarten years. In an attempt to confuse their teacher, who used their shoes as a means of identification, they swapped footwear, leaving their educator perplexed. “We switched shoes, and she got really confused,” they recounted with laughter, highlighting the playful mischief often inherent in sibling relationships.
Gaven and Trey Lewis, also identical twins, shared their own insights into the complexities of growing up together, joking about the duality of their constant companionship. “You have a best buddy, but you also have a punching bag every now and then,” they joked, underscoring the challenges and rewards of sharing a life with a sibling who looks almost exactly like you.
Interestingly, not all students at Cumberland High School were aware of the sibling relationships among the twins. Fraternal twins Jade and Ava Carr mentioned that they often blended into the crowd. “Half the people didn’t even know we were twins. One of our teachers thought we were cousins,” Jade explained. This highlights the varying dynamics that exist between identical and fraternal twins, as well as the nuances of twin identification within the school environment.
The twins also reflected on their emotional experiences when first separated in school. Gabriella Hutton recounted her anxiety on the first day of school, recalling how both she and her brother Gibson cried at the thought of being apart. “Our teachers had to reassure us that it would be alright, that we would see one another again shortly,” she reminisced, a reminder of the strong bonds shared between siblings.
As the new graduates prepare to embark on their next adventures, there is a mix of plans among the twins. Several of them intend to further their education locally at Lake Land College, while others will venture further afield to pursue their studies at universities across the state. In a different turn, Dominik and Maximus Strader have opted to join the military, a path inspired by their father. Dominik expressed his eagerness to explore new places and meet diverse people. “I wanted to travel the world and experience a lot,” he revealed.
Moreover, it is worth noting that Dominik and Maximus, along with Gaven and Trey, share an extraordinary bond not only as twins but also through their unique birth story; all four were born within six hours of each other on the same day, November 22, further illustrating the interwoven lives of these young graduates.
As the students of Cumberland High School reflect on their time together, the presence of five sets of twins in their graduating class serves as a charming and distinctive highlight. With future pathways diverging, these twins will now take their first steps into independence, carrying with them the cherished memories of their shared upbringing in their small town.
