Shannon Elizabeth, the actress best known for her role in the 2001 horror film ‘Thir13en Ghosts’, has publicly addressed the challenges she faced in her career after refusing to participate in a topless scene for the movie. In an interview with The New York Times, released earlier this month, the 52-year-old star revealed that her career slowed significantly following this incident, which she believes may have been a result of a producer’s alleged attempts to blackball her for standing firm in her decision.

In ‘Thir13en Ghosts’, Elizabeth starred alongside well-known actors Tony Shalhoub and Matthew Lillard, portraying a character enveloped in a home filled with ghosts. As filming progressed, she was confronted with the request to film a “previously unplanned scene” that necessitated her exposing part of her chest. Both she and her manager decided that she would not participate in this part of the shoot, a choice she stands by.

Reflecting on her experience, Elizabeth noted that awareness of similar situations rose significantly after the #MeToo movement gained traction in 2017. This cultural shift prompted actresses to share their own experiences with sexual harassment and abuse in the film industry. It was during this time that Elizabeth began to grasp the reality of her own situation, realising that hers was not an isolated instance.

Subsequent to her refusal, Elizabeth claims she was informed by a producer that a body double was used to achieve the shot the production desired. Disturbingly, she also alleges that another producer sought to undermine her career following her stance. “He had made calls to a lot of people and told them not to work with me”, she stated, explaining how this significantly impacted her opportunities in Hollywood.
During the height of her career, following her breakout role in ‘American Pie’ and appearances in ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’, Elizabeth’s film prospects began to dwindle after the incident. She expressed regret over potential projects that may have been lost during this difficult period. “It’s a bummer, because I don’t know what I lost out on, and what might have been, and the cool projects I could have done,” she lamented.
Despite these setbacks, Elizabeth remains optimistic about the future and acknowledges Hollywood’s willingness to provide second chances. She has remained active in the entertainment industry, with recent roles including her participation in the 2024 film ‘Plan B’ and an upcoming horror project titled ‘First Witch’, set to premiere on October 8.
In a notable career shift, Elizabeth launched her OnlyFans account earlier this year, which reportedly generated over £1 million in its first week. The subscription-based platform has allowed the actress to take control of her career in a new way, offering her fresh opportunities and a means to reconnect with her audience.
Through her journey, Elizabeth has exemplified resilience in the face of adversity, demonstrating the courage to stand up for her principles while navigating an often challenging Hollywood landscape. Her willingness to speak out may inspire others in the industry facing similar dilemmas, as she encourages an ongoing dialogue around respect and autonomy in film.
As she steps back into the spotlight, both through traditional media and platforms like OnlyFans, Elizabeth highlights the importance of self-advocacy and the need for change in the industry. She remains hopeful about what lies ahead, willing to embrace new opportunities while championing the need for accountability in Hollywood.
