Legendary musician Peter Frampton has recently opened up about a pivotal moment in his career when fellow rock icon Pete Townshend, of The Who, offered him a chance to tour in his place. In an interview with PEOPLE, Frampton revealed that while the proposal brought initial excitement, it ultimately led to frustration as the collaboration never materialised.

Frampton, aged 76, disclosed this intriguing anecdote in his new documentary titled *Frampton*, which premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Festival. The film chronicles not only his remarkable career but also his personal journey and his ongoing battle with inclusion body myositis, a rare muscle disease.
The story unfolds in the context of Frampton’s career uncertainties. He recalled receiving a call from Townshend during a tough time when his record label had dropped him. “He said, ‘I’ve got this idea. I want to not tour anymore, but I still want to write and be in The Who and I’ll write the songs and I wonder what you thought about taking my place in The Who on the road,’” Frampton recounted. His eagerness for the collaboration was palpable, but the reality of the situation quickly dampened his spirits.
Frampton encouraged Townshend to discuss the idea with his bandmates, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, but disappointingly, the communication broke down shortly thereafter. “I waited by the phone for a week, and after three weeks of silence, I decided I had enough. I felt like I was left in the lurch,” he shared, recalling the frustration that followed.
The singer took matters into his own hands after multiple attempts to reach Townshend. On one occasion, he found himself at Townshend’s studio, confronting him directly. “You left me in the lurch there. I was feeling so perturbed at the fact that it was there, right in the palm of my hand, and it’s gone,” Frampton reflected.
At that point in his life, Frampton was experiencing declining popularity and faced significant financial difficulties. He even borrowed $100,000 from Ahmet Ertegun, the president of Atlantic Records, to help stabilise his situation. Fortunately, it was his old friend David Bowie who provided a significant career boost when he invited Frampton to join him on his Glass Spider tour in 1987.
Reflecting on these challenging times, Frampton found a sense of solace in the idea that while one door may have closed, others were soon to open. His resilience shone through as he continued to create music, eventually releasing his latest album, *Carry the Light*, on May 15.
Today, the relationship between Frampton and Townshend has transformed into a positive friendship, which he described as being “good buds.” This reconciliation occurred at a Bruce Springsteen concert, where a chance encounter led to a heartfelt moment. “I saw Pete talking to Bruce before the show. I just went over and stood next to him, and he looked around and smiled, then kissed me on the top of my head. That was it; from then on, we were friends,” he recounted with fondness.
Frampton also noted that his relationship with Daltrey has flourished, with the Who’s frontman honouring Frampton by inducting him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. These reconciliations reflect not only Frampton’s ability to mend fences but also the enduring bonds that often transcend the competitive pressures of the music industry.
As he unveils his documentary, audiences are invited to delve into the myriad facets of Frampton’s life – from his meteoric rise to fame to the struggles he has faced and overcome. Directed by his longtime collaborator Rob Arthur, *Frampton* promises to provide both fans and newcomers to his music an insightful look at the man behind the legend.
With his career spanning over six decades, Frampton’s journey is marked by resilience and a passion for music that remains unwavering. As he continues to create and perform, his story serves as an inspiration to many, illustrating that even in the face of frustration and uncertainty, friendships and opportunities for growth can arise from difficult circumstances.
