Karen Read has recently opened up about her ongoing struggles, nearly a year after being acquitted of murdering her boyfriend, John O’Keefe. In a candid interview on the ‘Today’ programme, Read revealed that the trauma of the accusations still looms large over her life, stating she would “never be able to forget” what transpired.

The 46-year-old Read now finds herself engrossed in a web of legal issues, currently embroiled in a lawsuit filed against the Massachusetts State Police and the Town of Canton. She is alleging negligence and misconduct in relation to their investigation into the circumstances surrounding O’Keefe’s death. Read’s determination to seek justice is partly motivated by the need to reclaim her own life following the turmoil she has experienced.
“I was wronged in this way. I couldn’t just go back to life as it was,” Read expressed during her appearance. The lawsuit, filed a day prior to her interview, highlights her ongoing battle for vindication, although she faces a separate wrongful death lawsuit from O’Keefe’s family, filed in 2024.
During the interview, Read said she is currently out of work and dedicates her days to her legal battles. “I still don’t have my licence, and I’m back working on the case,” she shared, underscoring the extent to which her life has been disrupted. “I want this to be over, but it’s not done yet,” she added.
When asked about critics who continue to question her acquittal, Read noted that while she encounters some negative feedback online, her in-person interactions provide her with much-needed support. “I have no [bad] interactions no matter where I go,” she revealed, indicating that much of the support she experiences extends beyond the courtroom.
Despite facing ongoing scrutiny, she remains focused on O’Keefe’s memory. She referred to him as “the reason we’re doing this,” emphasising that the efforts to seek justice for herself and address alleged police misconduct are intricately linked to honouring his legacy. Read reflected on her frequent thoughts about O’Keefe, saying, “I have lived, nearly daily, John’s final moments,” demonstrating the lasting impact of his tragic death on her psyche.
O’Keefe was a Boston police officer whose untimely passing in January 2022 set off a highly publicised series of events. Initially accused of having struck him with her vehicle, Read argued that she was a victim of a significant law enforcement cover-up. After enduring two trials, she was acquitted of murder and other major charges, yet was convicted on a lesser charge of operating under the influence.
As she contemplates the future, Read expressed her commitment to continuing to share her story publicly. “I think it would be a waste for me to just disappear and go live on an island,” she remarked pensively, although she humorously admitted that it would be appealing. Her resolve to speak out underscores her belief in the importance of her narrative in shedding light on the complexities of her situation.
The road ahead remains fraught with challenges as Read navigates her legal hurdles while grappling with the emotional weight of her past. The case that has garnered widespread attention continues to stir discussions on the handling of investigations and the broader implications for those involved. Karen Read’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the profound consequences of legal battles on individuals’ lives, leaving her with an enduring quest for justice and personal peace amidst the turmoil.
