A British mother has tragically drowned in the Bahamas while attempting to save her two sons from strong currents at a popular snorkelling spot. The woman, identified as 36-year-old Leanne Gregory from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was on holiday with her family when the incident occurred on Tuesday, 20 October.

Local authorities reported that Leanne was snorkelling with her husband, Nathan, and their two children near the North Bimini Ferry Dock when both boys were swept away by a sudden and powerful current. In her brave effort to protect her sons, Leanne also became overwhelmed by the surge of water. Despite the swift response from rescuers, she was later pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby clinic.

In a heartfelt statement posted on a GoFundMe page, Nathan reflected on the harrowing events that unfolded that day, recounting how Leanne managed to keep one of their sons above water, but tragically lost her own battle with the waves. “This loss is unimaginable for our family,” he expressed, adding that she was the backbone of their household. “We were childhood sweethearts, my one and only.”
Nathan also praised Leanne’s heroism, stating, “I just have to be thankful for the hero she was in life and in death, and totally grateful for the fact my boys got out safely.” He highlighted her bravery and the sacrifice she made in ensuring her children’s safety, saying, “Thankful to my brave, amazing wife for keeping my boy above the water even as you were sinking.”
The boys’ grandmother, Kim Jones, explained the severity of the conditions, describing how both children, despite knowing how to swim, found themselves unable to cope with the treacherous waters. “The current was too strong, and the water was too choppy,” she remarked, underscoring the suddenness and danger of the situation.
Following the incident, the Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed that an autopsy will be carried out, although foul play is not suspected. The tragic event has resonated deeply with the local community and beyond, prompting an outpouring of condolences and tributes to Leanne.
In an online tribute, Nathan wrote, “She was the purest, most amazing wife, mother and friend to have ever walked this Earth.” He added that the boys are coming to terms with a loss no one should have to experience, acknowledging that they understand their mother died a hero.
Friends and family have rallied around the grieving Gregory family, contributing to the GoFundMe campaign set up to support the children in light of this devastating loss. The fundraiser highlights Leanne’s enduring legacy of love and courage as those near to her seek to honour her memory.
Leanne Gregory’s story serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent risks of water activities, especially in challenging conditions. Many are left reflecting on her heroism and the profound impact she had on the lives of those she loved, with her spirit expected to continue guiding her family in their time of grief.
