A tragic accident has altered the lives of a couple in England, as Kelly Stuart, a former technology worker, faces the daunting reality of paralysis following a fall caused by her husband, Simon. The incident on May 15, 2025, has led to a significant shift in their day-to-day life as they navigate the challenges that accompany her condition.

Kelly, 44, had previously dealt with health issues such as non-epileptic seizures and fibromyalgia for 18 years. Often reliant on her husband Simon, 45, for support, she frequently used a wheelchair. However, the situation took a critical turn when Simon slipped while carrying her down the stairs, resulting in both of them tumbling down. Tragically, Simon landed on top of Kelly, resulting in severe consequences for her health.
Initial assessments at the hospital indicated that Kelly was fine after the fall, categorising her seizure as a regular occurrence associated with her existing conditions. However, three months later, she experienced intense “thunderbolt” headaches and general weakness, which escalated into her blacking out. When she regained consciousness, Kelly discovered that she was paralysed from the shoulders down.
Doctors diagnosed Kelly with functional neurological disorder (FND) and functional movement disorder (FMD), both of which were attributed to the impact of the fall. These conditions significantly impair the body’s nerve signalling, resulting in profound physical limitations. Now, Kelly has lost all feeling in her arms, torso, and legs, requiring round-the-clock care and assistance for basic tasks, such as feeding herself or sitting upright.
Despite the trauma, Kelly has expressed compassion towards her husband. She stated that Simon had been under extreme stress and exhaustion as he balanced caring for his ailing mother before her passing and providing support for Kelly. “Simon blames himself, but I could never blame the person I love,” Kelly commented. She emphasised her belief in their mutual love and support, acknowledging that the incident could have happened to either of them during such a challenging time.
Adjusting to her new reality has been a painful process for Kelly. “It’s been very difficult, mourning the life I had before,” she candidly admitted. However, she remains hopeful about her recovery, expressing her commitment to progressing through physiotherapy and the use of muscle stimulation devices.
Following her accident, Kelly spent eight and a half months in hospital, where she endured an astounding 500 seizures as medical professionals worked tirelessly to restore her mobility and sensation. The slow pace of her recovery led to feelings of helplessness and depression, forcing her to seek mental health support during her time in hospital.
Since her discharge in April 2026, the couple is adjusting to a new chapter in their lives. They are working on adapting their home to suit Kelly’s needs, including constructing a wheelchair ramp and modifying their bathroom for accessibility. With the intention of securing further financial support for her ongoing care, they have launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising funds for vital physiotherapy and muscle stimulation devices as well as a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
“It has been quite a challenge,” Simon expressed, candidly sharing his emotional struggles since the accident. Despite feeling guilty about what transpired, he takes solace in having Kelly back home as they face their new normal together. He added, “We just have to adjust to this new life for her.”
Amidst the adversity, Kelly has a simple desire: “I just want to live as normal a life as possible now.” Their story serves as a reminder of resilience, the importance of support, and the unconditional love that can persist even in the darkest of times. As they continue to adapt, the couple stands united in their quest for a fulfilling life despite the obstacles they face.
