An 18-year-old man named Michael Sanchez has been charged with multiple offences, including first-degree murder, following a tragic incident in Buckeye, Arizona, on 14 May. Prosecutors allege that Sanchez shot and killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Rylee Montgomery, who was only 16 years old, along with their unborn child. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, as it also left two other women critically injured.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Sanchez faces charges for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and tampering with monitoring devices. The horrifying shooting occurred outside a residence around 8:15 p.m., where Montgomery was shot. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, only to discover two additional female victims suffering from gunshot wounds. These victims were identified as 17-year-old Abby Krebs, Montgomery’s best friend, and 22-year-old Myah Hembree.

Montgomery was approximately three and a half months pregnant at the time of her death. Krebs, who was six months pregnant herself, underwent an emergency cesarean section following the shooting, but tragically, her newborn son, Timothy Rylee, succumbed to his injuries just six days later. A GoFundMe campaign established in memory of the victims revealed that both teenagers had envisioned a future in which their children would grow up together, a dream now shattered by this shocking incident.
Reports suggest that tensions had arisen between Sánchez and Montgomery prior to the shooting. Friends and family indicated that Montgomery had broken up with Sanchez in March after enduring a series of threats. On 13 April, Buckeye police received a report regarding a separate incident of alleged assault involving the pair. However, due to conflicting accounts from Sanchez and Montgomery, police were unable to establish sufficient grounds for an arrest.
Following this prior incident, law enforcement discovered allegations that Sanchez had threatened Montgomery with a firearm in a separate encounter in Avondale, Arizona. Despite police involvement, the situation remained unresolved until the tragic shooting occurred.
After the event, Sanchez was apprehended in Avondale with assistance from local law enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service. His alleged accomplice, 19-year-old Antonio Tequida, has also been indicted on charges of first-degree hindering prosecution. Tequida was accused of driving Sanchez to the scene of the shooting and later assisting him in evading capture.
Sanchez currently remains in custody without the possibility of bail, while Tequida is detained on a $100,000 bond. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. Legal representation for both men has not been disclosed at this time, complicating the public’s understanding of their defence strategies.
At present, Myah Hembree is still in intensive care on a ventilator, bravely fighting for her life following the attack. Her family has expressed gratitude for the ongoing support while pleading for continued prayers during this harrowing time. They described her as displaying remarkable strength and determination in the face of significant medical challenges.
The local community has rallied around the grieving families, with many expressing outrage and sorrow over the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The loss of Rylee Montgomery and her unborn child, coupled with the ongoing plight of Hembree and her family, has prompted discussions about domestic violence and its far-reaching effects.
As the case progresses, it highlights an urgent need for awareness surrounding issues of domestic abuse and the complexities often involved in such situations. Authorities remind anyone experiencing domestic violence to reach out for help and utilise available resources, such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Further developments in the case are expected as investigations continue and the justice system takes its course. The Buckeye community mourns the loss of two young lives and stands in solidarity with the victims’ families during this incredibly difficult time.
