Authorities in Florida have confirmed the identity of skeletal remains found on military property last year as belonging to John Thomas “JT” Watson, who went missing in August 2015. The 38-year-old had been attempting to rebuild his life after his release from prison just a month prior to his disappearance.

Watson was last seen on 7 August 2015, driving a Mitsubishi Mirage in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. In the weeks leading up to his disappearance, he had been living with relatives and staying in motels while adjusting to life outside of prison. Just a month before he vanished, he purchased two vehicles: a Ford Mustang and the aforementioned Mitsubishi.
The search for Watson began after he failed to make contact with family members and friends. Authorities conducted extensive searches in the area and investigated numerous tips regarding his whereabouts. Two months after he was last seen, officials located Watson’s abandoned Mitsubishi on Eglin Air Force Base property, specifically in a wooded area between Coy Burgess Loop and Nelson Road. Notably, the keys were found still inside the vehicle.

On 24 November 2022, skeletal remains were discovered near Forest Oak Road on the Eglin Air Force Base property, alongside keys to a Mustang, raising concerns about their association with Watson. Following a detailed forensic analysis and collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and DNA Labs International, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on 2 June 2023 that the remains belonged to Watson.
The nature of Watson’s disappearance has left relatives and the local community searching for answers. Family members had hoped for a different outcome and have been left devastated by the confirmation of Watson’s death. They remembered him as a person striving for a better future after his turbulent past.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Watson’s disappearance and death remains open, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have stated that they will continue to explore all leads and tips related to the case, seeking to clarify what happened during the time Watson was missing.
Community members have been encouraged to come forward with any information that might aid the investigation. Those with relevant details are urged to contact the Walton County Sheriff’s Office at 850-892-8111 or to reach out to Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers at 850-863-TIPS.
As investigations continue, the loss of JT Watson serves as a reminder to the community about the challenges faced by those trying to re-integrate into society after incarceration and highlights the importance of support systems for individuals in similar situations.
