The long-awaited film adaptation of the beloved ‘Masters of the Universe’ franchise is set to hit cinemas on 5th June, featuring a vibrant cast and exciting new interpretations of classic characters. Among the stars is Alison Brie, who takes on the role of the cunning sorceress Evil-Lyn, while the illustrious Jared Leto portrays the nefarious Skeletor. Both actors recently shared insights about their experiences during a fan screening in New York City.

Alison Brie, renowned for her versatile performances across a range of genres, expressed her enthusiasm for playing a villain in this adaptation. At the screening on 1st June, she described the dynamic between her character and Leto’s as “so fun.” She explained, “They’re evil, but they’re funny about it.” This portrayal encapsulates the quirky essence of the film, which is not only a nod to its campy roots but also offers fresh humor and depth to its antagonist duo.

Leto’s Skeletor and Brie’s Evil-Lyn represent a complicated relationship filled with tension, described by Brie as “very love/hate.” The actress noted that her character often resorts to eye-rolling, emphasising the importance of not taking their villainy too seriously. “You want to really savour it,” she added, highlighting the playful nature of their performances.
Directed by Travis Knight, known for his unique vision and meticulous attention to detail, the film has received praise for its engaging direction. Brie mentioned that Knight encouraged improvisation during filming, which contributed to a light-hearted atmosphere on set. “Everything felt light on its feet and it was a lot of fun,” Brie remarked, reflecting on the creative freedom afforded to the cast.
In addition to Brie and Leto, the film features a strong ensemble cast. Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, also known as He-Man, tasked with saving his home world through the wielding of the Sword of Power. Camila Mendes takes on the role of the fierce warrior Teela, while Idris Elba plays General Man-at-Arms, alongside Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress. This eclectic mix of characters promises to deliver an action-packed and engaging narrative.
Interestingly, Brie noted that there was no intention of maintaining villainous demeanour off-screen while filming. “No playing villains off camera,” she said, emphasising the fun collaborative environment of the shoot. She appreciated the intricate sets that were crafted for the film, stating, “I was just having fun all the time, taking it all in.”
Working alongside Leto also had its lighter moments. Brie shared that she tried to give him “some breaks” while on set, acknowledging the physical demands of his character. “He wore a very heavy blue muscle suit as Skeletor. I feel like I wanted to let him conserve his energy,” she quipped, illustrating her supportive nature behind the scenes.
As this adaptation of ‘Masters of the Universe’ prepares for its theatrical release, excitement is palpable among fans of the franchise. The film is a reboot of an iconic series that originally rose to fame in the 1980s with a cartoon and a subsequent film featuring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. This new interpretation is expected to attract both long-time fans and newcomers alike, providing a fresh perspective on classic characters.
Alison Brie is also set to showcase her talents in another upcoming project, ‘The Revisionist’, which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. As she embraces her role as Evil-Lyn, it is clear that Brie is relishing the opportunity to delve into the world of supervillains, adding another commendable performance to her already impressive career.
With its mix of nostalgia, humour, and gripping action, ‘Masters of the Universe’ is poised to enchant audiences when it debuts in cinemas in just a few days. The film not only aims to honour its storied past but also seeks to establish itself as a contemporary favourite in cinematic adaptations of beloved franchises.
