In a letter disseminated to families and staff, Uxbridge Public Schools Superintendent David Ljungberg, together with Uxbridge High School Principal Michael Rubin, characterised the situation as “sobering.” This communication came just after the recent graduation celebrations for the school’s Class of 2026, highlighting the seriousness of the matter amid joyous occasions.
The correspondence outlined that a number of female faculty members had been diagnosed with breast cancer or precancerous conditions over recent years, which has raised significant concern within the school community. While officials have stated that they are unable to ascertain whether these cases are interconnected, they are committed to exploring all avenues, including environmental factors, that may have influenced the teachers’ health.

“We acknowledge that it’s possible these cases are unrelated,” the letter explained, “but as a precaution, we are examining any potential environmental issues that could be relevant to these diagnoses.” This proactive approach reflects the district’s concern for the well-being of its staff and students.
In response to these diagnoses, the school district reached out to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Uxbridge Board of Health. Collaborating with epidemiologists, environmental specialists, and scientists, the district is undertaking a comprehensive investigation into a range of environmental influences that could potentially be at play.
Officials from the Massachusetts DPH have indicated that, at present, there is no evidence suggesting any immediate danger within the school premises. Consequently, they have advised that there is no need to restrict access or use of the facility. The Massachusetts DPH’s Indoor Air Quality Unit is scheduled to conduct air quality assessments at the school on June 4, focusing on key areas such as carbon monoxide levels, humidity, temperature, airflow, and the presence of organic compounds that might negatively impact air quality.
In addition to air quality testing, investigators will scrutinise various aspects of the school’s infrastructure, including electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They will also delve into the building’s history to uncover any previous usages that might have introduced hazardous materials or conditions. Encouragingly, initial water testing has already determined that the water supply to the school is not a contributory risk factor.
Health officials have proactively reached out to the teachers affected by the diagnoses, seeking to compile information regarding factors such as age, medical history, genetic predispositions, and specific health conditions in an effort to identify any unifying causes among the cases reported.
Uxbridge High School, which opened its doors in 2012, serves approximately 600 students across its 123,000 square feet. The ongoing evaluation has prompted school leaders to urge the community to refrain from speculation regarding the circumstances. “We encourage community members not to engage in speculation or draw unsupported conclusions,” Ljungberg and Rubin affirmed, insisting that the health and safety of all students and staff remains the foremost priority.
To provide support during this unsettling time, the school district has made counselling services available for both students and staff who may be feeling the emotional strain from this situation.
As investigations continue, the school administration remains committed to transparency and the well-being of its community, reaffirming its dedication to addressing the concerns surrounding the reported health issues. The timing of the investigation is critical, with many waiting anxiously for the results of the environmental tests as the school continues to operate normally.
In summary, Uxbridge High School is navigating a complex health concern that has fostered a collaborative response from health authorities and school officials alike, working together to address the mysterious health conditions impacting staff while ensuring a safe environment for its students.
