A tragic incident in Canada has claimed the life of Hrishikesh Koloth, a 27-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and mining site worker originally from India. Koloth was fatally attacked by a black bear on May 8 while working at a remote site for UraniumX Discovery Corp, approximately 50 miles northeast of Points North Landing in Saskatchewan.

Details surrounding the fatal encounter indicate that Koloth was at the exploration site when the attack occurred. Black bears, alongside grizzly bears, are known to inhabit this isolated region. Following the attack, a bystander euthanised the bear before authorities arrived on the scene, though detailed responses from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Community Safety have yet to be published.

Colleagues and friends expressed their shock and sorrow over Koloth’s untimely death. Esen Boldkhuu, CEO of UraniumX, released a statement conveying the company’s condolences. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,” he stated, extending thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family and friends. The condolences illustrate the impact Koloth had on those around him, both in his work and personal aspirations.
Originally from Kerala, India, Koloth had settled in Penticton, British Columbia, where he lived with his brother, Arjun Koloth. Arjun described his sibling as a person of resolve, relaying that everyone had high hopes for Hrishikesh’s future in martial arts. “It shouldn’t have been like this,” he lamented when speaking to CBC.
Hrishikesh’s passion for fighting was evident in the way he trained and competed. His brother recounted how fear never deterred him, highlighting Koloth’s willingness to take on challenges regardless of their complexity—ranging from last-minute fights to formidable opponents. “He just wanted to fight,” relayed Arjun, reflecting on Hrishikesh’s ambition and fearless spirit.
The brothers shared a dream of success in the ring. Koloth had been preparing to embark on a new chapter of his career, set to begin a role as a boxing coach in June. His aspirations extended toward competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a testament to his dedication to the sport. “That was his dream. That’s why he came here,” Arjun emphasised, underscoring the motivations that led his brother to leave India for Canada.
Family and friends in India are mourning Koloth’s loss, and Arjun has returned to Kerala for his brother’s funeral. The tragedy has resonated deeply, not only within their family but among the wider community that supported Koloth’s fighting career.
As investigations continue surrounding the bear attack, the circumstances highlight the potential dangers that can arise in remote working conditions, especially in regions where wildlife encounters are a risk. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of both wildlife and life itself.
Social media tributes to Hrishikesh Koloth have surfaced, reflecting the fond memories held by those who knew him. As the community begins to heal, Koloth’s legacy in the MMA scene, although shortened, continues to inspire those who witnessed his journey.
