Eighteen-year-old Semaj Davis has demonstrated remarkable resilience following a harrowing car accident that nearly cost him his life. The high school senior, who hails from Georgia, faced a life-altering situation when he was involved in a crash on April 12, 2026. As he made his way home from spring break with friends, the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the highway and collided with a tree. In a tragic turn of events, a tree branch punctured the windshield, severing Semaj’s femoral artery and resulting in severe injuries, including a broken right leg.

In the aftermath of the collision, Semaj’s friend, who was driving the car, attempted to seek help but was met with disbelief from passing traffic. “Nobody would stop,” Semaj recalls, highlighting the desperate situation. After forty agonising minutes, a passing trauma nurse, who happened to be on the scene, intervened. Using her medical knowledge, she pressed a headrest against his leg to stem the profuse bleeding. “She was like an angel,” Semaj expressed, emphasising the critical role she played in saving his life.
Following the initial treatment, Semaj was airlifted to Ascension Sacred Heart’s Trauma Center in Florida, where doctors endeavoured to repair the damage caused to his leg. His mother’s account of the situation is fraught with emotion. LaShawnda Woods-Roberts, a senior assistant district attorney, reflects on the terror surrounding her son’s injuries and their subsequent medical struggles. After multiple blood transfusions and a series of surgeries, Semaj was transferred to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where medical staff continued to fight to preserve his leg.

Despite extensive attempts to salvage his limb, Semaj faced numerous complications, including blood clots and severe swelling. His hope began to dwindle when his doctors ultimately announced that they had exhausted all options. On May 1, they performed a hip disarticulation amputation to remove his left leg. “I cried,” he recalled, acutely aware of the profound change this would bring to his life. Yet, amidst the despair, a chance encounter with another patient who had undergone a quadruple amputation offered Semaj a newfound sense of hope and determination.
As his recovery progressed, Semaj set his sights on graduating alongside his peers. Initially, his family planned for a decorated hospital room where he could witness the ceremony via livestream. However, Semaj was resolute in his desire to attend the graduation in person, declaring, “I have to make it to graduation.” His mother shared that the medical team was sceptical about this plan, but Semaj’s unwavering spirit and dedication to his recovery quickly became source of inspiration for those around him.
On May 19, Davis was transported to his graduation ceremony at South Cobb High School, with hospital staff giving him an emotional send-off. Despite being transported on a stretcher and enduring significant pain, Semaj’s determination shone through when one of his favourite nurses assisted him as he crossed the stage to receive his diploma. “I was excited I got to go,” Davis reflected, acknowledging the bittersweet experience.
Now rehabilitating at Children’s Scottish Rite Hospital, Semaj has become more committed than ever to pursuing a career in nursing, aspiring to help others as he has been helped. Community support for him has also surged, with a GoFundMe and a donation site established to aid in his recovery.
Amidst the challenges he has faced, Semaj’s gratitude towards his family remains profound. He noted how his mother, grandmother, and father have shown unwavering support, often remaining stoic to provide him with strength. “I know it’s tough. They kept me going,” he said, demonstrating the importance of familial bonds in the face of adversity. As he continues on his recovery journey, Semaj Davis inspires those around him with his remarkable strength and determination to overcome significant obstacles, embodying a spirit of resilience that resonates deeply in his community.
