The incident, which took place on May 25, led to a shooting that not only claimed Coon’s life but also left a 16-year-old grocery store employee recovering in hospital. According to the Pleasant Hill Police Department, the attacker, Allen Prince, 27, is currently facing multiple serious charges including first-degree murder and several counts of armed criminal action. Following the confrontation, Prince also sustained injuries to himself, which he allegedly inflicted after two armed bystanders attempted to engage him.
Police Chief Tommy Wright disclosed the details during a press conference on May 26, where he confirmed Coon’s identity as the deceased victim. He praised the bravery of the two local men who intervened during the crisis, stating, “Shortly after the first several shots were fired, two gentlemen from the Pleasant Hill area who were armed had the courage to approach this suspect, who then turned the gun on himself.”

The shooting has left the Pleasant Hill community in deep mourning. Wright emphasised the personal loss felt by Coon’s family, describing her as not merely a victim, but as a beloved daughter, mother, and grandmother. He highlighted her deep connections within her family, saying, “She was somebody that cared deeply for her family, and her family cared deeply for her.”
In an obituary, Coon was remembered as a warm-hearted individual who found joy in crafting, sewing, antiquing, and spending quality time watching crime shows. The obituary reflected her strong bond with her family, noting, “Above all she loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she loved to spoil and plan grand sleepovers.” Coon’s simple yet fulfilling lifestyle is described as one enriched by her love for crafting and home DIY projects.
Neighbours reflected on Coon’s life, revealing that she had moved into her home in Pleasant Hill approximately three years ago. Prior to her death, she had bravely battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma for a year before entering remission around two years ago. Her family has confirmed that she has been cremated and private services will be arranged at a later date.
In relation to the injured teenager, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated, reportedly gathering over £38,000 in support. The fundraiser mentions that while the young worker is currently stable, he faces a lengthy and arduous recovery process.
Throughout this distressing situation, the community has banded together, showcasing solidarity in their grief and support for those affected. The tragic loss of Amy Coon has not only shaken her family but has reverberated through Pleasant Hill, a locality now grappling with the shock of the events that unfolded on what was supposed to be a day of remembrance.
While the investigation continues, the police have assured the public of their commitment to bringing justice in this regrettable case. The profound impact of Coon’s life and her tragic death highlights the everyday fragility of life, as her family and friends seek solace in shared memories and the love she provided throughout her life.
