Michael Doherty, a 38-year-old man, has received a sentence of a minimum of 33 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of 21-year-old Courtney Angus. The tragic case unfolded in Dewsbury, England, where Angus was discovered dead in Doherty’s home following a violent confrontation with the police in July 2025.

Doherty’s arrest took place in the town centre, where he brandished a knife and threatened law enforcement officers. According to West Yorkshire Police, the tense situation escalated when Doherty attempted to enter a nearby pub, prompting officers to deploy Tasers in an effort to calm the escalating threat. During this confrontation, Doherty disclosed to the police that he had killed someone and that there was a body in his residence.

Upon entering Doherty’s home, police found the lifeless body of Courtney Angus. Initial reports indicated that she had suffered severe injuries, having been assaulted and strangled. An autopsy later confirmed that she had also been the victim of a serious sexual assault, intensifying the level of horror surrounding the case.
The investigation revealed that the violent attack on Angus was a direct result of her rejection of Doherty’s advances. Senior Investigating Officer Dan Bates stated that Doherty’s violent behaviour was further evidenced by his actions in the town centre, where he threatened both a shop worker and the responding officers.
Having pleaded guilty to the murder charge, Doherty was sentenced on May 28. This resolution has provided a sense of closure for Angus’s family, although the emotional scars remain. In a heartfelt statement, they expressed their profound grief, lamenting the loss of their beloved Courtney. “Courtney was such a loving and vibrant young woman with her whole life ahead of her,” her family reflected. “She was a huge part of this family, and she will never be replaced.”
The family articulated their struggle to comprehend the circumstances that led to her untimely death, indicating their ongoing pain. “While we are relieved that this case is now over and that her killer has been sentenced,” they stated, “our pain is as strong as it was on the day that she left us.”
This case highlights the urgent issue of violence against women, as it illustrates the tragic consequences of domestic abuse and rejection. The authorities are continually seeking to address such blights on society by encouraging victims to come forward and seek help.
Those suffering from similar circumstances are urged to reach out for assistance, with resources available such as the National Sexual Assault Hotline in the UK. As communities continue to grapple with such incidents, increased awareness and proactive measures remain crucial.
In light of this distressing event, the message from the police and community advocates is clear: awareness and action are essential in preventing further tragedies. The tragic loss of Courtney Angus serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued vigilance against violence and the importance of supporting victims and their families.
