Matthew Fox, best known for his role as Jack Shephard in the iconic television series ‘Lost’, has opened up about his decision to relocate from Los Angeles to Italy. In a candid interview with PEOPLE during an event for his latest project, ‘The Madison’, the actor shared that this significant change was inspired by the series’ conclusion and an ardent desire to prioritise family life.

Having spent over six years in the limelight with ‘Lost’, which aired from 2004 to 2010, Fox recognised the toll fame took on his personal life. The 59-year-old actor recalled, “I spent a lot of time, for a few years there, heavily in the spotlight, specifically with ‘Lost’. Following that, I did a few years of film work. For me, stepping away was about dedicating time to my family.”
Fox, who shares two children — daughter Kyle and son Byron — with his wife Margherita Ronchi, noted the timing of their move coincided with pivotal moments in their children’s lives. “Our daughter was entering her teen years at the time,” he explained. “I had been travelling extensively for promotions and filming, and both Margherita and I felt it was crucial to focus on our kids during these challenging years.”
Describing his children as “absolutely incredible” and expressing immense pride in them, Fox emphasised the importance of creating a nurturing environment. “When you’re in this business, it’s essential to carve out a space where you feel like you’re truly living life,” he stated. He believes that taking time for oneself and one’s family can greatly influence and enhance an actor’s work when they return to their craft.
The move to Italy allowed Fox to explore various interests aside from acting, including music and a newfound passion for flying. He shared, “Flying is tremendously important to me; I spend a lot of time doing it. It has become almost a meditative and therapeutic activity for me, helping to organise my mind.”
Fox also reflects on his efforts to learn Italian, humouring his audience when he said, “I’m getting there. It’s not an easy language to learn, but I’m making progress.” This willingness to embrace local culture marks his commitment to immersing himself in his new surroundings.
Earlier this year, Fox discussed the motivations behind his break from the entertainment industry during an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’. He reiterated the need for engagement with his family, saying, “I had missed parts of their childhood because of the demands of acting. It was the right moment for me to step back and devote attention to the people I love most.”
After ‘Lost’, Fox took a step back from the screen, making only a few film appearances until 2015. He then enjoyed a long hiatus from television and film until 2022, when he joined the cast of Peacock’s ‘Last Light’. Following that comeback, he appeared in the Australian comedy series ‘Caught’.
More recently, Fox has returned to television as Paul Clyburn in the streaming drama ‘The Madison’, which features an impressive ensemble cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Chapman, and Kurt Russell. With ‘The Madison’ now available on Paramount+, Fox is excited to share this new chapter of his career, emphasising how his experiences in Italy and with his family have enriched his performance.
As Fox continues to navigate his life between family in Italy and his career back in the entertainment scene, he remains a compelling figure, proving that the importance of family and personal fulfilment often go hand in hand with professional success.
