Rachel Reid, the author behind the acclaimed hockey romance novel *Heated Rivalry*, recently shared insights into her experiences as a writer and the enthusiastic fanbase surrounding her work during a Q&A at a Spotify Books event in New York City. Despite being the creator of the much-loved franchise, Reid humourously admitted to struggling at trivia nights dedicated to her own story, revealing that she often finds herself outperformed by fans.

During the event, the 45-year-old author recounted her experiences at trivia nights specifically themed around *Heated Rivalry*. “I attended two and didn’t fare too well, coming in sixth place at one and third at the other,” she said, chuckling at her lack of knowledge. Reid noted the focus of many questions leaned more towards the HBO adaptation than the book itself. “I realised I haven’t watched the show as extensively as the fans have. I even asked questions to Jacob [Tierney, the show creator], and he didn’t know either,” she added, fostering a sense of camaraderie with her audience.

Reid expressed her delight over the sense of community that *Heated Rivalry* has fostered, both through the book and its television adaptation. “It’s been wonderful to witness how fans connect with the story and with one another,” she said. “Before the current season finished airing, there were already organic watch parties emerging, which was amazing to see. These gatherings have provided safe spaces for fans, something that’s particularly meaningful right now.”
She continued, reflecting on personal stories shared by fans, “I’ve heard from people who, perhaps in their workplace, found someone who also loves the show. This connection has helped them feel more comfortable being themselves. It’s heartwarming to see this kind of support evolving around the story I’ve created.”
In addition to discussing her growing fanbase, Reid shared her excitement about the numerous celebrities who have expressed admiration for the series. Among the notable names, she mentioned Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, and Cynthia Erivo, all of whom have shown interest in the show. Reid particularly recalled an early interaction with Elton John, who requested early access to the series. “I hope he enjoyed it,” she remarked, enthusiasm evident in her voice.
As a bestselling author, Reid is currently in the process of writing the seventh book in her expansive *Game Changers* series, which includes *Heated Rivalry* as the second installment. Titled *Unrivaled*, the upcoming book will mark the conclusion of the journey for the characters Shane and Ilya, whose portrayals by Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie respectively have gained significant traction on HBO Max.
“This latest book is set in 2021, which is something I have to keep in mind while writing,” she explained during her talk. Reid reassured fans that *Unrivaled* will not put Shane and Ilya through excessive turmoil, stating, “I don’t want to drag them through hell. They’ve endured enough hardship already.”
Reid’s success with *Heated Rivalry* and the subsequent fan enthusiasm surrounding both the book and its adaptation seem to be a source of both pride and inspiration for the author. As the series continues to evolve, Reid’s focus on building connections among readers and viewers remains a central aspect of her work.
Through her unique storytelling and the vibrant community that has formed around her novels, Rachel Reid exemplifies how literature can transcend its pages, creating bonds and discussions among a diverse audience. As anticipation builds for *Unrivaled* and future releases within this hockey-themed universe, fans are left eagerly awaiting what lies ahead for their beloved characters.
