A 36-year-old man from Hawaii has been apprehended following a series of alleged homicides that have shocked the rural community of Pāhoa. Jacob Daniel Baker is facing a total of four murder charges after the bodies of three elderly men were discovered in separate locations. The police report reveals a disturbing sequence of events that led to his arrest.
Police began their investigation on May 25 after discovering the remains of one victim, identified as Robert Shine, aged 69, in a cement pond in lower Puna. The autopsy results revealed that Shine had died from strangulation. This grim discovery prompted deeper inquiries, and the following day, authorities found another body within close proximity, that of a 79-year-old man displaying suspicious injuries. The identity of this victim remains undisclosed pending family notification.

On the evening of May 26, police located a third victim, John Carse, also 69 years old, in Pāhoa. An autopsy indicated that Carse succumbed to trauma from sharp force. Despite the proximity of the crimes, police have not confirmed whether the murders are connected, as stated by Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna during a recent press conference.
In a dramatic turn of events, Baker was on the run for several days before being captured in Kalapana. A passerby noticed him attempting to hide in a grassy field and contacted the authorities. His arrest followed a considerable manhunt involving local law enforcement, further elevating the tensions among residents in the area.
Baker, who reportedly had been living in exchange for his work picking coconuts on his ex-wife’s farm, faces multiple charges. These include one count of first-degree murder, which relates to the intentional killing of two or more individuals, as well as three counts of second-degree murder associated with the three victims. In addition to the murder charges, he is also facing several property crimes, including first-degree burglary, auto theft, and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
Notably, two days prior to the alleged killings, Baker’s ex-wife and another woman sought temporary restraining orders against him, citing threats and harassment. However, these requests were denied by a judge due to insufficient evidence, leaving the community on edge ahead of the tragic events that unfolded.
Baker has been denied bail regarding the murder charges and remains in custody. Additionally, while bail for the property crimes has been set at £193,000, he would still be held without the option for release due to the serious nature of the murder charges he faces.
As of now, Baker is scheduled to make his first appearance before a court on June 1. The case marks a grim chapter for the Pāhoa community, known for its peaceful and laid-back lifestyle. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the slayings and urge anyone with information to come forward.
The devastation caused by Baker’s alleged actions raises questions about community safety and the challenges of domestic situations escalating into violence. Local residents and officials are grappling with the impact of these events on their tight-knit community as they await further developments in the case.
