Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, popular hosts of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” recently shared updates about their newly adopted rescue dog during an exclusive interview at the opening night of the Broadway revival of “Other Desert Cities” in New York City on 18 October. The couple expressed their enthusiasm as they prepared to welcome their new furry family member, who is currently undergoing treatment for a parasite.

The couple has opted to delay bringing their new pup home until they can ensure the health and safety of their first dog, Lena, a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix that they adopted in 2020. Ripa explained, “We don’t have him yet because he had a little bit of health issue,” to which Consuelos added, “A parasite. So they’re treating it and then he’s going to come.”
Despite the setback, Consuelos remains optimistic about the timeline for their new family member’s arrival, suggesting it could happen “any day now.” This sentiment reflects the couple’s eagerness to start this new chapter.
Ripa and Consuelos made headlines earlier this month when they announced the adoption of their new dog, who was featured on the show during its Adopt a Dog Week event in collaboration with the rescue organisation Pet ResQ Inc. Consuelos instantly connected with the dog, initially named Lucas, when he first appeared on set. The pup quickly made himself at home in Consuelos’ arms, even dozing off while the couple engaged with their audience.
By the following morning, the couple formally announced their decision to adopt the pooch. “We have news: We adopted Javi yesterday,” Consuelos shared during the show, while Ripa joyfully added, “We have a new baby.” They indicated that their new addition wouldn’t be coming home just yet, needing to undergo essential medical tests first.
In a recent episode, the hosts also introduced their new dog to Lena. Though Lena appeared unsure at first, Ripa expressed optimism that the two dogs would become fast friends after a period of gradual introductions.
The couple is still in the process of deciding on a name for their new pup. Consuelos suggested the name Javi as a nod to the dog’s possible lineage, speculating that he may be part Havanese. However, Ripa revealed that they haven’t yet settled on whether to retain Lucas as his name or officially adopt Javi. With their three adult children chiming in with suggestions, Ripa humorously remarked, “Stay out of it, you don’t live here!”
Seeking input from their studio audience, Ripa and Consuelos asked the crowd to vote on the name. Javi emerged as the clear favourite, although the couple had not yet finalised their choice as of 19 October.
This adoption is particularly meaningful for Ripa and Consuelos, who faced the heartbreaking loss of their long-time companion, Chewie, in February 2025 at the age of 17. Ripa expressed her belief that Chewie had played a role in bringing Javi into their lives, saying, “I bet Chewie sent Javi here for us,” as the new dog shares a resemblance with their late Shih Tzu.
As the couple anticipates the arrival of their new puppy, Ripa likened their excitement to that of expectant parents, sharing, “I started nesting last night. I couldn’t sleep.” Her enthusiasm echoed Consuelos’ sentiments as he agreed, “It’s exciting.”
Overall, Ripa and Consuelos are on the brink of a joyous occasion, eagerly anticipating the moment when their new rescue dog will officially join their family.
