A remarkable story of resilience and determination has emerged from Long Island, New York, where 17-year-old Ryan Martino is set to graduate high school with a flawless 4.0 grade point average, despite facing significant health challenges. Diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the conclusion of his eighth-grade year, Martino’s academic journey has been anything but ordinary.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that impacts the body’s lymphatic system. Martino began his high school experience while recuperating from chemotherapy treatments. Unfortunately, the treatment compromised his immune system, causing him to frequently miss classes. In addition to his academic achievements, Martino has been an active caddy at the Nassau Country Club, a role he has embraced over the years. His dedication has paid off, as he has been selected as one of approximately 380 students across the United States to receive the prestigious Chick Evans Scholarship, which is valued at around £125,000, covering his college expenses for four years.
Scholarship recipients are chosen based on a rigorous set of criteria, including a strong record in caddying, outstanding academic achievements, proven financial need, and commendable character traits. “The second she said those words, my heart dropped,” Martino reflected.
