Paul Rudd Reveals the Other “Clueless” Roles He Auditioned for, Says Movie’s Success Was a ‘Bit of a Slower Burn’

Paul Rudd, the well-known actor famed for his role in the romantic comedy “Clueless,” recently delved into his early experiences in the industry during an interview on the podcast ‘Therapuss.’ Reflecting on the film’s lasting appeal, Rudd shared insights from his journey leading to his iconic role as Josh, the leading man in the 1995 cult classic.

During his conversation with host Jane Shane, Rudd recalled that “Clueless” was pivotal to his career, marking both a significant stepping stone and his introduction to the cinematic world at the age of 24. Interestingly, he described it as only the second film in which he had appeared, though it was the first to be released.

Rudd recounted how the audition process unfolded shortly after he graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. With a newly acquired agent and scripts being sent his way, he seized the opportunity to audition for several roles in the film. “They were making this movie, and there were a lot of parts for young people, kids and stuff. So I read the script and I liked it. I thought it was smart, and I thought it was kind of interesting,” he shared.

Despite being keen on various characters in the film, including Christian and Murray, Rudd was ultimately directed to audition for the role of Josh. “I asked if I could audition for a bunch of the roles… They said, ‘Well, would you read for Josh?'” he explained. This flexibility in the audition process accentuated the film’s inclusive cast, which included notable actors such as Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, and Donald Faison.

When asked whether he had anticipated the film’s significant impact, Rudd admitted that he had no idea what to expect at the time. He explained, “The whole thing was so new to me. Auditioning was new. I hadn’t ever really been in a movie.” This sense of unfamiliarity is common among newcomers to the industry, highlighting the unpredictability of success in Hollywood.

Reflecting on the film’s inception, Rudd spoke about the emotions surrounding their initial table read. It invigorated the cast, as many drew inspiration from the legendary John Hughes films they had grown up watching. Rudd recalled the initial thoughts amongst the cast: “Wouldn’t it be cool to be in a movie that for a generation that this is a movie that they kind of will be able to quote later on?” The dreams of creating something meaningful for a new audience became a shared goal, feeding into the positive dynamics within the cast.

Surprisingly, Rudd noted that “Clueless” did not achieve immediate, overwhelming success. “I think it was successful when it came out, but it wasn’t a smash. I think just over time, it just kind of hung on,” he stated. Rudd described the film’s popularity as a “slow burn,” attributing its rise to fame partly due to the proliferation of cable television and DVD rentals, which allowed new generations to discover the film.

Since his breakthrough role in “Clueless,” Rudd’s career has only flourished further, with notable performances in movies such as “Anchorman,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and the “Ant-Man” series. His ability to resonate with audiences has enabled him to transition successfully across various film genres.

Most recently, he has added another project to his resume, with “Power Ballad” hitting select theatres on 29 May.
