A mother from Alabama, Kaitlynn Dominick, has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated child abuse following the tragic death of her 17-month-old son. The infant died under suspicious circumstances at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital on May 5, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), Dominick, 22, took her son to the hospital on May 4. Medical personnel noted that he had a medical condition necessitating the use of a surgically implanted gastric feeding tube for nourishment. Sadly, the child was pronounced dead the following morning.

The hospital staff raised concerns about the child’s lab results, which subsequently led the hospital’s physician to contact law enforcement. Upon investigation, officers discovered that Dominick provided inconsistent accounts regarding the events leading up to her son’s hospitalisation.
Police investigations revealed that Dominick allegedly admitted to concocting a dangerous liquid solution that she administered through her son’s feeding tube. This mixture reportedly included table salt and another undisclosed liquid. The BCSO has indicated that the introduction of this lethal mixture into the child’s feeding tube resulted in a medical emergency that ultimately led to his death.
Captain Justin Correa of the BCSO stated, “There was a concoction, a liquid mixture, that was introduced into the child’s preexisting feeding tube that then led to this medical emergency.” He further explained how the harmful nature of the ingredients used in the mixture could have had different effects on an adult compared to an infant with existing medical conditions.
Prosecutors allege that Dominick acted with intent to harm her son, suggesting she sought to relieve herself of the responsibilities associated with his care. Baldwin County Chief Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz voiced her concerns, saying, “I do believe that she did know that this would harm the child … because she knew that if the child was taken to the hospital, there would be adequate medical professionals who would then be tending to that child.”
Following the incident, Dominick was initially taken into custody and admitted to Baldwin County Jail on May 26. She was released two days later, although specific details regarding her release conditions remain unclear.
The ongoing investigation is being supported by the Baldwin County Coroner’s Office (BCCO) and the Alabama Department of Human Resources (ADHR), who are working in collaboration with the BCSO to gather more information surrounding the incident.
As of now, it is not known if Dominick has retained legal representation to comment on her behalf regarding the charges. The BCSO, BCCO, and ADHR have been contacted for further statements but have yet to respond.
The heartbreaking case has raised serious questions about child protection and the responsibility of caregivers. Authorities continue to work diligently to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, and the community remains in shock over the incident.
As investigations proceed, further updates are anticipated, shedding light on the complexities of the case and the legal implications that could follow. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those with medical conditions and the dire need for vigilant care from caregivers.
