A college student has shared a startling story after mistakenly consuming a bottle of fabric freshener, believing it to be water, following a night of celebrations. Lukia Pardoe, a 20-year-old from Birmingham, found herself in hospital after what was meant to be a simple refreshment turned into a frightening episode.

The incident occurred in the early hours of May 8, during the final days of the academic year when Pardoe and her friends were celebrating at a party. Reflecting on the events, she admitted to having consumed quite a bit of alcohol that evening. Once back in her dormitory – which she noted she had not visited for some time – she found herself feeling extremely thirsty at around 3 a.m.

On her desk, Pardoe discovered three bottles. Two contained water, while the other held fabric freshener. In a moment of confusion, she began chugging from the bottle she thought was safe to drink. “I unscrewed what I thought was a water bottle,” she explained, adding that the initial burning sensation she felt was dismissed as a result of the hot pizza she had eaten prior to sleeping.
In a disorientated state, she managed to consume a substantial amount of the harmful liquid before realising something was amiss. “I had half of the bottle,” she recalled. Nonetheless, she continued to drink more, overwhelmed by a strange taste she described as “really bad.” Following this, she found herself repeatedly heading to the kitchen for more glasses of water, likely trying to wash away the unpleasant chemical taste lingering in her mouth.
The alarming realisation struck her the following morning. When a friend entered her room, Pardoe’s attention was drawn again to the bottle. Panic registered as she exclaimed, “I’ve drunk half of that bottle.” Her friend acted quickly, driving her to the hospital with the half-empty container in tow.
Upon arrival at the hospital, Pardoe’s experience turned somewhat comical when a staff member laughed uncontrollably at her story, finding the incident hard to believe. “She couldn’t breathe [from] laughing. She had to leave the room,” Pardoe recounted. Despite the light-hearted moment, the seriousness of her situation remained. Thankfully, her extensive water intake assisted in flushing out some of the toxins from her system.
Medical staff provided her with charcoal tablets to help eliminate any remaining harmful substances, and she experienced lingering symptoms such as a chemical taste in her mouth and stomach cramps. However, she expressed relief that the outcome was not worse.
In reflecting upon the experience, Pardoe conveyed a mix of humour and horror at the events that unfolded. “My family and friends keep laughing at me; I haven’t heard the end of it,” she said, considering the incident now as a funny story rather than an alarming one. She expressed gratitude for the lack of severe consequences and noted that she has learned a valuable lesson since the ordeal.
To avoid similar confusion in the future, Pardoe has vowed not to keep potentially harmful household products within arm’s reach of her living space. The unfortunate mishap has provided her with a cautionary tale that, while alarming at the moment, has since become a source of laughter among her peers.
Pardoe’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance, especially when household products may be mistaken for consumables in the context of late-night activities. Her story highlights not only the risks involved but also the unexpected moments of levity that can arise even in dire situations.
