A chance encounter on a hot day in Florida sparked a remarkable friendship between 90-year-old Bob McVey, a member of the 1960 Olympic gold medal-winning men’s ice hockey team, and Anatalie Dean, a professional caretaker. Dean spotted McVey walking alone and decided to lend a helping hand, leading to an extraordinary transformation in McVey’s life.

The day they met, Dean, who runs Nurturing Nest Senior Care Services, was concerned for McVey’s wellbeing. “I didn’t see him as my potential client,” Dean remarked. “I just thought, ‘Oh my God, this man is gonna fall.'” Despite McVey’s initial reluctance to accept help, claiming he had no money, Dean insisted that financial issues would not be a barrier. They exchanged numbers, laying the groundwork for a relationship that would grow into a deep friendship.

Dean’s first visit to McVey’s home took place in May 2022, when she arrived to clean his bathroom. Upon entering, she was struck by the state of the condo. McVey was living without essential kitchen appliances, including a functional stove, which forced him to rely on sandwiches from a nearby gas station for sustenance. Recognising the need for further assistance, Dean returned frequently to help with laundry, mail collection, and even to take him out for meals.
As their relationship blossomed, Dean learned more about McVey’s past. A Facebook message to his stepdaughter revealed that he was not only an Olympic athlete but also someone who had experienced significant hardships. Years earlier, he had been scammed out of his money by someone he trusted, leading him to sell his gold medal and hockey jersey during a particularly difficult financial period following the passing of his wife.
Despite his scepticism about trusting others, McVey felt comfortable with Dean, stating, “I just felt it.” Their bond deepened as Dean began visiting him weekly, and in January 2023, she arranged for an employee from her care business to provide assistance to McVey twice a week at no charge. “He doesn’t give me a dime, but I make sure he gets the same service that my other clients do,” Dean explained.
This year, as Dean began the process of renovating McVey’s home, the attention from local news outlets led to an outpouring of community support. After a segment aired on Fox and ABC affiliate WSVN, donations for McVey’s renovations began to arrive. Dean set up a GoFundMe page to raise additional funds for the project, and soon, local contractor Jeff Cohen offered his services for free, while BrandsMart stepped in to donate essential appliances.
McVey is overwhelmed by the support he’s received, expressing deep gratitude for those who contributed to his GoFundMe. “I just thought it was unbelievable that they would take the time to help an old man,” he said. With new appliances, fresh paint, updated blinds and flooring, McVey’s home has been transformed. “This place is all beautiful, clean, painted, nice and everything. It’s gorgeous,” he declared.
In addition to the physical renovations, Dean has become a cherished companion for McVey. He considers her “the best of friends.” To celebrate his 90th birthday on March 14, Dean treated him to a new outfit and took him out for dinner, where they danced and celebrated alongside his friends. “My friend Anatalie has been so nice to me, and I’m so grateful for all that she has done for me,” McVey said, appreciating her kindness and support during a vulnerable time in his life.
Dean’s involvement in McVey’s life extends beyond caregiving; it represents the profound impact one person can have on another’s experience. As McVey reflected on his current situation, he expressed a deep sense of blessing: “I’m just so blessed,” he said, looking out at the ocean from his newly refurbished apartment. With Dean’s compassion and dedication, McVey is not only enjoying a safer home but also the joy of companionship at this stage of his life.
