In a heartwarming revelation, Australian mother Louise Shaw is sharing her journey of welcoming triplets amidst a whirlwind of challenges and joy. The 39-year-old’s pregnancy was most unexpected; she discovered she was expecting in January 2025 after experiencing severe nausea, leading her to take a pregnancy test that surprised her and her husband, Steve, 37.

Louise recounts that the moment she saw the two lines on the test was one of disbelief, as the couple had not been actively trying for a child. Yet, what began as surprise quickly transformed into excitement for the new additions to their family. Their initial joy was compounded during their first ultrasound at eight weeks, where they were startled to hear three heartbeats. “We were overwhelmed but eventually shared the news with family, who were equally astonished yet delighted,” Louise explained in a personal essay for the publication, *that’s life!*

However, the road ahead was fraught with complications. Due to the high-risk nature of carrying triplets, Louise had to change her healthcare team and undergo close monitoring throughout the pregnancy. At her 11-week appointment, she faced distressing news that one of the fetuses showed signs of genetic malformation. “We were devastated; the nurse indicated potential signs of Down syndrome and possible heart issues,” Louise reflected. Despite this setback, the couple remained resolute in their love for their unborn daughters.
Louise and Steve proceeded with a fluid test for their affected child, which ultimately returned positive results, alleviating some of their fears. Yet the pregnancy continued to be a source of stress, requiring bi-weekly scans to monitor their daughters’ health and development. By the time she reached 29 weeks, the pressures mounted, and Louise was advised to enter the hospital for bed rest.
The momentous day arrived at 34 weeks and four days when she welcomed her daughters—Ada, Lillie, and Maggie—into the world. Each birth was accompanied by a listening experience of empowering songs aimed at celebrating girl power. Ada entered first at 11:16 a.m. weighing 5 lbs, followed closely by Lillie at 4.6 lbs, and finally little Maggie at 4.1 lbs. Soon after their births, the triplets were taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Louise recalls her emotional first meeting with her daughters in the NICU. “It was terrifying to see their tiny bodies equipped with oxygen support, but I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude that they were alive,” she shared, adding that Lillie was the only one stable enough to be held at that moment.
Tragically, the situation turned grave when, on the second day, Maggie experienced a seizure. Following an MRI, doctors diagnosed her with cerebral palsy, which affects movement and balance. Louise described the roller-coaster nature of Maggie’s health during those early days, filled with moments of hope and alarming setbacks. “She required resuscitation multiple times after suffering seizures and even cardiac arrests, yet she fought back each time,” Louise revealed.
After three months, Ada and Lillie were finally able to come home. However, Maggie required additional time in the NICU as she battled various challenges. Louise’s commitment to her daughters shone through, as she conveyed how the support from family and friends has been instrumental. Her sister, Ally, initiated a GoFundMe campaign that helped cover in-home care expenses for Maggie.
Now, at nine months old, the triplets are described as “loud, squirmy and full of personality.” Despite ongoing challenges, particularly in addressing Maggie’s care and therapy needs, Louise feels fortunate for the unwavering support from their community. She established an Instagram account named @shaw_triplet_glam_squad to connect with other families navigating similar journeys. “This community has provided not just friendship but real support; many have visited us in the hospital, ensuring Maggie receives love and care when we couldn’t be there,” she noted.
Louise’s journey exemplifies the resilience of a mother navigating the complexities of parenting triplets while facing profound health challenges. Through her openness and sharing, the Shaw family continues to inspire many, demonstrating an unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
