Kandynn Wilson, 34 years of age at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of first-degree murder with the added circumstance of “lying in wait” after a trial that concluded in December 2025. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office provided detailed accounts of the events leading up to the attack, revealing that Kandynn had travelled approximately 500 miles from Oakland to carry out the crime.
On the day of the murder, Kandynn had taken a “vacation day” from his job, during which he first mistakenly approached what he believed was Ericka’s workplace. Discovering his error, he subsequently made his way to her residence and concealed himself in the parking lot, waiting for her return.

As Ericka arrived home from work and exited her vehicle, Kandynn launched a savage attack, targeting her with extreme violence. Witnesses reported that the assault was shocking in its brutality, prompting a nearby resident to intervene. This neighbour, armed with a bat, chased Kandynn, successfully forcing him to flee the scene and abandon key evidence, including his gloves and the weapon used in the attack.
Law enforcement tracked down Kandynn just hours later. Authorities reported that he was discovered covered in his estranged wife’s blood, painting a harrowing picture of the events that had unfolded earlier that evening.
District Attorney Summer Stephan addressed the profound implications of this case in a public statement. She emphasised that intimate partner violence remains a pervasive and perilous issue, underscoring the need for a continued commitment to protecting victims and ensuring that their abusers face justice. “This case serves as a grave reminder of the terrible impact domestic violence can have,” she stated.
In addition to his life sentence without the possibility of parole, Kandynn received an additional year in prison. The ruling reflects the seriousness with which the court viewed the crime and the clear intent in Kandynn’s actions on that fateful day.

The case of Ericka J. Wilson serves to remind society of the dire consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need for protective measures for at-risk individuals. Advocates continue to call for comprehensive strategies for addressing this ongoing crisis, striving not only to hold perpetrators accountable but also to foster a safer environment for all potential victims.
As communities mourn the loss of Ericka, efforts persist to prevent such tragedies from recurring. The impact of this case will likely resonate far beyond legal boundaries, prompting discussions around domestic violence prevention and victim support initiatives across the country.
