In an inspiring tale of perseverance, 75-year-old Peggy Moore has finally achieved her long-held dream of graduating from Temple University, nearly five decades after first enrolling. Moore’s story is a testament to resilience, as she balances her academic pursuits with a dedicated career at the same institution, where she has worked for 44 years.

Moore began her academic journey in 1980, but life’s responsibilities diverted her attention when she stepped away to raise her two sons. “When things happen, sometimes it’s just not your time,” she reflected on the challenges that led her to pause her studies. Despite these setbacks, her commitment to Temple remained steadfast, and she returned to her job while raising her children.

The loss of her eldest son to a congenital heart defect at the young age of 19 profoundly affected Moore. Struggling with grief, she found solace and purpose through her work at the university. A colleague noticed her distress and encouraged her to take a class, an advice that would pivotal in her academic journey. “That was the best advice that he gave me,” she recalled.
Over time, Moore began accumulating college credits and eventually returned to class, finding herself enrolled alongside her two granddaughters, Najah and Raihanah Siddiq. This unique experience created an intergenerational atmosphere of encouragement and motivation. Najah expressed pride in watching her grandmother grow and evolve as she worked towards her degree. “It was a great experience to just see her grow and develop,” she shared.
This year, Peggy donned her cap and gown and walked across the graduation stage, a moment she had long awaited. “When I crossed that stage, the first thing that came to my mind was, ‘I’ve made it! I’m finally here!’” she said, beaming with pride. It marked not only the culmination of her educational aspirations but also a celebration of her resilience through personal tragedies.
To honour Peggy’s remarkable achievement, her granddaughters organised a special graduation party, ensuring that family and friends could come together to celebrate her success. “Too often we have older people in our family who have accomplished so much and contributed to our lives but we aren’t able to really thank them before they’re gone,” Najah remarked, highlighting the significance of this celebration while Peggy could still relish her accomplishments.
Looking forward, Moore is not resting on her laurels. She plans to pursue a graduate degree, demonstrating that age is no barrier to lifelong learning. “Oh no, I’m not slowing down at all. No, I’m not letting grass grow under my feet!” she quipped, underscoring her determination to continue her education.
Peggy Moore’s graduation is more than just a personal triumph; it serves as an inspiration to many who may feel that it is too late to pursue their dreams. Her story encapsulates the idea that with perseverance, support, and a belief in oneself, any goal can be achievable. As she embarks on the next chapter of her academic journey, Peggy serves as a reminder that learning and growth have no expiration date.
