Dennis Quaid, the renowned actor celebrated for his roles in films such as “The Parent Trap,” has taken steps to amend his child support arrangement with ex-wife Kimberly Buffington. The actor, 72, filed a petition this week to terminate his monthly child support payments amounting to £13,750 for their twins, Thomas and Zoe. This decision comes as the twins are poised to graduate from high school later this year.

According to court documents accessed by PEOPLE, Quaid’s petition aligns with the terms established in his 2018 divorce settlement. The agreement stipulates that child support payments may cease when a child completes 12th grade or reaches any other specified milestones, provided they are still under the age of 19 and a full-time student. Both of his children are scheduled to graduate in May and June.
In addition to the primary child support payments, Quaid has requested modifications to the additional amount he is required to pay Buffington if his earnings exceed £1.1 million. He is seeking to have this extra payment recalibrated according to each child’s graduation date instead of tying it to his overall income for the year 2026. This adjustment reflects a shift in his financial obligations as his children transition into adulthood.
Quaid and Buffington, who was his third wife, welcomed their twins in November 2007 in Santa Monica. Quaid is also the father of Jack, born to his second wife, actress Meg Ryan. While he has generally maintained privacy regarding his family life, Quaid has occasionally shared insights, particularly concerning his children’s well-being.
Last summer, the actor provided an update on his daughter Zoe amid concerns surrounding severe flooding in Texas. During an interview segment on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Quaid reassured viewers that his daughter was safe, as she was working as a camp counsellor not far from Camp Mystic, the site affected by the floods. He described the experience of hearing about the flooding while trying to reach her as particularly harrowing.
“Hill County in Texas is a magical place, especially for children going to camp there. It’s a cherished memory you carry with you all your life,” Quaid stated, expressing his relief that Zoe’s camp remained unscathed. He recounted his anxiety when trying to contact her during the unfolding disaster, noting that he “didn’t get a lot of sleep that night.”
As graduation approaches, the transition for Quaid’s children marks a significant milestone for the family. The end of child support payments will signal the beginning of a new chapter in both Quaid and Buffington’s lives.
The actor’s decision to pursue changes to the child support agreement highlights the complexities of co-parenting arrangements and the shifting financial responsibilities that often accompany the maturation of children. Many parents face similar circumstances as their children reach adulthood, leading to negotiations that reflect changing financial situations and life milestones.
As Dennis Quaid prepares for his twins’ graduation and the consequent changes to his financial obligations, he continues to reflect on his role as a father and the memories he has created with his children. His public statements reveal a man deeply committed to supporting his children’s journeys into adulthood while navigating the intricacies of his personal life.
In the wake of these developments, the actor remains focused on his family, emphasising the importance of their safety and well-being as they embark on the next stages of their lives. The adjustments in child support payments, much like Quaid’s reflections on fatherhood, signify both an end and a new beginning for this prominent actor and his family.
