A tragic car crash took place in the early hours of July 31, 2022, claiming the lives of two young men, Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. The incident involved Mackenzie Shirilla, who was driving the vehicle that crashed into a brick wall shortly after leaving a friend’s home in Ohio.

In the hours leading up to the accident, Shirilla was at a friend’s house for what was described as a casual gathering. Reports indicate that the evening kicked off with a graduation party hosted by a mutual friend, Kellie Vraja. Shirilla, along with Russo and Flanagan, arrived at the party at around 10:15 p.m. They were reportedly chill and did not engage in excessive drinking or drug use—save for some marijuana, according to witness testimonies.

Shirilla left Vraja’s home approximately half an hour later to head to another friend’s house, that of Paul Burlinghaus, arriving around 11 p.m. Those present at Burlinghaus’s home described the gathering as equivalent to a ‘normal sleepover.’ Activities included watching videos and engaging in conversations, and those who attended reported feelings of camaraderie, a significant contrast to the tragic events that would follow.
Rosie Graham, a friend of Shirilla, recounted the night, noting that they were merely enjoying each other’s company. She shared that there was no tension or any altercations throughout the night, and that Shirilla had fallen asleep by around 3 a.m. Graham specifically mentioned that Russo was tenderly caring for Shirilla while she rested.
At around 5 a.m., as the night drew to a close, Flanagan made a last-minute decision to accompany Shirilla and Russo back home, despite initially planning on going home with another friend. Their departure occurred at 5:30 a.m., just six minutes before the devastating crash took place. It was reported that Shirilla accelerated to speeds of approximately 100 mph before colliding into a brick barrier.
Following the accident, Shirilla sustained injuries and was subsequently hospitalised. However, despite the tragic circumstances, she was later charged in connection with the deaths of her friends. By November of 2022, she had been arrested, leading to a trial that concluded in August 2023. Ultimately, Shirilla was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years to life in prison.
In the wake of the incident, a Netflix documentary titled “The Crash,” released in May 2023, has reignited interest in the case. It features accounts from various friends and attendees of that fateful night, providing a clearer picture of the events leading up to the tragedy. These stories have shed additional light on the nature of the gatherings and the dynamics among the friends.
Subsequent investigations indicated that while guests at the parties reported using marijuana, there were no signs of any alcohol consumption or illicit drugs at the time of departure. In fact, when Shirilla’s blood was tested following the accident, the results showed positive for THC but negative for alcohol or psilocybin.
The outpouring of response from friends and family has underscored the shock and sorrow created by the loss of two young lives. Many have highlighted the strong bonds formed through years of friendship, making the accident even more poignant. Detailed accounts of that night have established a clear narrative that challenges the more sensationalised portrayals surrounding the crash.
As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath, the legal consequences for Shirilla serve as a haunting reminder of the fragility of life and the far-reaching consequences that can arise from a single night’s decisions. The case has prompted discussions about youth behaviour, responsibility, and the importance of making safe choices, especially during social gatherings.
