The popular series, *The Testaments*, has officially been renewed for a second season even before its first season finale aired on 27 May. Showrunner Bruce Miller expressed excitement about the future of the show, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel. The writers’ room has already begun planning ahead, which Miller sees as crucial, especially given the youth of the cast.
“We want to stay ahead of the game,” Miller stated in a recent interview with PEOPLE. He highlighted the importance of not allowing too much time to pass between seasons, noting that the cast are still in their teenage years. “You can’t get too far behind,” he said, emphasising that young actors like Mattea Conforti, who is 19, should not be ageing out of their roles.

Miller’s confidence in the show’s trajectory is apparent. He revealed that he has envisioned a multitude of storylines, stating, “I wouldn’t write a pilot if I couldn’t think of 200 stories, 200 things to happen.” This approach helps prepare for the possibility of overwhelming success. “If you hit it out of the park and are the luckiest person in the world, then you’re screwed if you don’t have 200,” he quipped.

The series, which serves as a sequel to *The Handmaid’s Tale*, has been well received, and Miller understands the importance of meeting audience expectations. He aims to build a narrative that will not only satisfy viewers but will also allow for a coherent ending. “In television, it’s almost never the case that you finish the season, and then they cancel you,” he remarked, revealing the complexities of television production.
Miller envisions a total of approximately 30 to 40 episodes for *The Testaments*. He explained his unique approach, balancing the need for practicality in television with its inherent impracticalities. “I’m trying to be practical in the practical world of television—but as impractical as possible, which is also part of my job,” he added.
The first season concluded on a dramatic note, with shocking developments that set the stage for an intense second season. Key among these events was the character Becka, played by Mattea Conforti, killing her father, with her mother later taking the blame. This cliffhanger, combined with Agnes discovering that June (Elisabeth Moss) is her biological mother, propels the series into deeper emotional territory.
Rowan Blanchard, who portrays Shunammite, one of Agnes and Daisy’s friends, spoke about her character’s development in light of these traumatic events. During the finale, the season closed with Shunammite, Agnes, and Daisy walking hand-in-hand, symbolising their solidarity amid adversity. “When we shot that, I kind of assumed that in the meantime, offscreen, Agnes had told me what was happening, and that there was a new, even closer intimacy formed,” she shared.
Blanchard also expressed curiosity about how Shunammite’s character will evolve in the upcoming season, particularly how she might begin to question the societal norms of Gilead. “I think she really wants to be pregnant and be a wife,” Blanchard explained. “She doesn’t see anything wrong or oppressive about that, and she thinks the other girls are very strange for not wanting to do that.” However, she speculated that the harrowing events surrounding the season finale could alter Shunammite’s perspective on her aspirations.
As excitement builds for the second season, fans can look forward to further character development and complex narratives woven into the fabric of Gilead’s oppressive society. The first season of *The Testaments* is currently available for streaming on Hulu, providing an excellent opportunity for new viewers to catch up before the next chapter unfolds.
With Miller at the helm and a determined cast ready to resume filming, *The Testaments* promises to delve deeper into the lives of its characters while exploring themes of resistance, identity, and the quest for autonomy in a dystopian world. The forthcoming season is not only anticipated for its thrilling storylines but also for the rich character explorations that Miller has committed to realising. As Gilead continues to unfold its dark narrative, audiences are poised for an enthralling second season that seeks to challenge and engage.
