Patti LaBelle recently marked her milestone 80th birthday with an extravagant party in New York City, although the iconic songstress admitted that the event came as no surprise to her. Speaking candidly on Angie Martinez’s popular podcast, LaBelle revealed that she had been aware of the party’s planning well in advance, despite the efforts of her friends to keep it under wraps.

Reflecting on the celebration, which was held in May 2024, LaBelle recalled how she played along with the ruse of being surprised. “They thought I was shocked,” she remarked, “but I knew about it way before they thought I did.” The singer recounted a moment leading up to the party that raised her suspicions; she was dressed in a stunning Zang Toi gown and informed that she was being taken for a meeting with Walmart. “I thought, ‘What are we going to a meeting with Walmart for, me looking like this?’ So I played along.”
LaBelle’s doubts were confirmed when she arrived at the venue, the Glasshouse, only to find a host of familiar faces waiting for her. “When we opened the door and saw all of those wonderful people, I said, ‘I’m so shocked!’ Girl, I was lying,” she laughed. The guest list boasted an impressive array of celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg, Gayle King, Tamron Hall, Gladys Knight, and even LaBelle’s mailman, who had made the journey from Philadelphia to celebrate.

Despite her premonition about the event, LaBelle described the night as beautiful and deeply emotional. With tears of joy filling her eyes as she greeted her loved ones, she shared, “I had a lot of tears, but I had to keep my lashes, so I couldn’t cry too much.” The singer expressed gratitude for the attendance of her remaining family members, as well as friends and colleagues from her long and illustrious career.
Following her birthday celebrations, LaBelle continues to remain active in the music scene. Currently, she is on tour as part of the “Queens” tour, alongside fellow legends such as Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Stephanie Mills. This prestigious collaboration highlights LaBelle’s stature within the industry and showcases her enduring talent.
Looking ahead, LaBelle has solo tour dates scheduled throughout June and into November, a testament to her remarkable stamina and dedication to her craft. “I never really thought at 80 I would still be standing on stage singing,” she reflected during the interview, marveling at her continued ability to perform.
In addition to her touring activities, LaBelle also shared her ambitions for new music. She noted that it has been 22 years since she released an R&B album, despite having worked on jazz and gospel records during that time. Having recently embarked on the creation of new R&B material, she expressed her excitement and disbelief at still being able to connect with an audience after so many years.
LaBelle’s story is one of resilience and passion, demonstrating that age is no barrier to creativity and performance. She concluded her conversation with Martinez by expressing her gratitude, saying, “Girl, you’re blessed.” As she embraces this new chapter in her life, Patti LaBelle continues to inspire audiences with her artistry and unwavering spirit.
