The fatal incident occurred on May 19, 2023, while Maldonado was riding as a passenger on a Harley-Davidson Tricycle near the North Carolina state line on Tennessee’s Highway 129, commonly referred to as the “Tail of the Dragon.” This stretch of road, renowned for its challenging twists and turns, is a popular destination for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts. Reports indicate that Maldonado and the driver, 59-year-old Eduardo Falcone, veered into the wrong lane and collided with an embankment during a sharp right turn, resulting in their tragic deaths.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the motorcycle crash is part of a worrying trend on this notorious highway, which has seen 19 fatalities since 2021. Safety concerns have been raised about this stretch of road, as its winding terrain presents significant risks for even experienced riders.
Maldonado, originally from Argentina, immigrated to the United States in 1996. His passion for cooking led him to establish several restaurants, including the popular El Gaucho Inca, which he opened with his wife, Rocio Navarrete, in 2011. This establishment uniquely blended flavours from Peruvian, Argentinian, and Italian cuisines. Over the years, the couple went on to create multiple successful dining venues, cementing Maldonado’s reputation within the local food community.
Rocio Navarrete expressed her profound grief in a heartfelt social media tribute, describing Maldonado as not just her husband, but her best friend and confidant. She reminisced about his ability to bring joy and laughter into the lives of those around him. “He always made you laugh, chuckle, and made you feel loved,” she wrote, highlighting the indelible mark he left on his community.
Maldonado’s family is also profoundly affected by his sudden passing. He leaves behind three children, Julieta, Matias, and Mariana, in addition to two stepdaughters, Bonie and Michelle, and his siblings, Rodrigo, Brenda, and Alexis. His stepdaughter, Michelle Montalvo, remarked that the ill-fated trip to Tennessee was meant to be a fun adventure between friends, showcasing the spontaneity and zest for life that characterised Maldonado.
His children remembered him as a devoted family man with a keen eye for creativity, particularly in cooking and interior design. They described him as a person who was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, embodying kindness and maintaining a vibrant presence. “He was funny, he would always welcome you with good jokes and contagious laughter,” they wrote in their tribute.
The loss of Mariano Luis Maldonado has left a significant void in the hearts of those who knew him. Many in the Fort Myers community have turned to social media to express their condolences and share memories of the chef who touched the lives of so many. His unique culinary talents and warm spirit will be deeply missed by friends, family, and patrons alike.
