A Colorado woman is seeking assistance from the public following the alleged abduction of her service dog, Opal, from her own garden. Hannah Cummins, who runs a daycare in Denver, reported that her beloved pet, a six-year-old chihuahua-greyhound mix, disappeared while she briefly stepped inside her home.

On 16 May, Cummins left Opal basking in the sun while she attended to some indoor tasks. Upon her return, she discovered that Opal was missing. “She’s been with me for six years. I rescued her six years ago, and it’s just really hard,” Cummins explained emotionally.

Opal plays a crucial role in the daycare, offering support to children experiencing emotional and social challenges. Cummins described her dog’s significant impact, stating, “She works with kids who are having any social, emotional needs. When they’re first coming into the school, when they’re transitioning, she works with them one on one.” The absence of the small canine has profoundly affected the children at the daycare, with seven-year-old Layla, who has known Opal since infancy, expressing, “She kind of just made me feel like if I was sad or something, she would kind of support me.”
Cummins suspects that Opal was taken rather than simply lost. Several neighbours, along with a nearby business, have reported sightings of a man without a home accompanied by a dog resembling Opal in the Highlands area. “There’s multiple people that have said that they’ve seen Opal,” Cummins noted, adding a sense of urgency to her search.
However, the quest to find Opal has been complicated by scammers who are exploiting the situation. Cummins reported receiving messages from individuals asking for money and personal information, alongside misleading AI-generated videos and images of dogs claiming to be Opal. One fabricated video particularly upset her, as it featured a dog closely resembling Opal, yet she could discern it was a digital creation. “It’s like they took an AI video somehow, but you can tell it’s AI,” she said, highlighting the distress these scams have caused amidst an already challenging situation.
In response to the theft of her beloved dog, Cummins has lodged a report with the Denver Police Department and is calling on anyone with credible information to come forward. “I just want her home,” she said, aptly capturing the deep emotional bond she shares with Opal.
As the media highlights Cummins’s plight, the community’s involvement could prove indispensable in locating the missing service dog. The incident serves as a reminder of how deeply pets can impact our lives and the lengths to which owners will go to reunite with their beloved animals.
Opal’s story has resonated widely, drawing attention to the responsibilities that come with service animals and the critical role they play in enhancing the emotional well-being of children. As Cummins continues her search, she remains hopeful that the public will join forces in helping bring Opal back home where she belongs.
