When Presley was born, Ashley felt confident about motherhood, having enjoyed her experience with her eldest daughter, Breah. Ashley recalls a time when she felt capable of handling more children without hesitation. However, as Presley reached the age of eight or nine months, Ashley began to notice developmental differences. While other children were starting to grasp food and communicate, Presley lagged behind. The pivotal moment came when Ashley’s mother-in-law discreetly suggested she seek an autism evaluation for Presley, leading to a diagnosis during Presley’s first grade.

Reflecting on this journey a decade later, Ashley acknowledges the emotional complexities surrounding the diagnosis. “You kind of have to process it,” she stated. “Sometimes you have to mourn and grieve. But it did bring us peace because you can make a plan.” Those early years were fraught with anxiety, as Ashley grappled with the uncertainty of Presley’s developmental milestones. The contrast with parents of neurotypical children, who often voiced their worries about standard childhood achievements, was particularly poignant for her.
In sharing her story, Ashley has highlighted the significance of each milestone in Presley’s development. By the age of six, Presley started to mimic phrases, and by the time she was twelve, she began to engage verbally on her own. For the Lewis family, each of these milestones was a considerable victory. “Every little step is a celebration,” Ashley declared. “Every baby milestone is a huge win, and we just go crazy in celebrating everything.”
However, as she navigated these challenges, Ashley discovered a dearth of resources for families with children on the autism spectrum. She felt compelled to share her insights and lessons learned through her experiences. With a following of 1.4 million across Instagram and TikTok, Ashley’s social media presence grew organically when she decided to make her family content public after relocating across the country.
Her first viral post in 2022, featuring Presley’s excitement over her new red braids, resonated with audiences, garnering a staggering 1.9 million views. This moment was not just about a hairstyle but about the joy that Presley radiated, showcasing her personality and charm. It was a breakthrough that revealed the powerful need for community within the autism space.
“Whether they know someone with autism or not, people want to see how families interact with their special needs child,” Ashley explained. The online support she has received has played a vital role in her wellbeing, as messages from followers provide encouragement and wisdom. Ashley often turns to more experienced families for advice, while also serving as a source of guidance for new parents seeking help.
“I’m hoping that, even from social media, parent community groups can come from this,” she added. Ashley aspires for conversations around autism to become less taboo, allowing families to share their experiences openly and provide the necessary support to one another.
Through her journey, Ashley Lewis has fostered a sense of belonging not just for her family but for countless others navigating the complexities of parenting a child with autism. By turning her initial fears into a thriving community, she has truly embraced the role of a beacon of hope and courage for many.
