The victims have been identified as 65-year-old James K. Walker, his son 18-year-old Kencerio D. Walker, and Kencerio’s partner, 18-year-old Nykeria Johnson. The trio was discovered inside a blue vehicle by deputies from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and emergency responders, who arrived promptly at the scene. All three were pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Swainsboro High School confirmed that both Kencerio Walker and Nykeria Johnson had recently graduated from the class of 2026. James Walker, besides being a father, was also a beloved former member of the school’s staff. In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, school officials expressed their condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families, friends, classmates, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
Reports indicate that the driver of the other vehicle involved in the incident, who is also 18 years old, sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical care. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event is currently underway.
In the wake of this shocking loss, students from the class of 2026 came together to organise a candlelight vigil on Monday, May 25, in memory of their peers. Those who knew the victims spoke fondly of their qualities and the positive impact they had on those around them. Vickie Renfroe, a nurse who worked with James at Emanuel Medical Center, described him as a beacon of positivity. “When he walked in every day, it was just like a ray of sunshine,” she recalled. “He always has a positive attitude, and he always has something nice to say.”
Ashley Robinson, a youth pastor at Jesus Saves Church, highlighted Kencerio’s innate leadership qualities. “He led by example,” she reflected, emphasizing that he had a unique way of inspiring those around him that often went unnoticed. These anecdotes paint a portrait of young lives full of promise, abruptly cut short.
In lieu of funeral expenses, Johnson’s family has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover the costs and describe her as a “beautiful soul.” Similarly, James Walker’s daughter has initiated a GoFundMe to assist in managing the financial implications following the tragic loss of her father and brother.
The Emanuel County School District released a statement summarising the community’s grief, describing the lost individuals as “students with bright futures ahead of them” and praising James Walker as a “former colleague who always had a smile on his face and left a joyful impression on those he encountered.” They urged the community to keep the affected families in their thoughts and prayers during this devastating time.
Authorities from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the Burke County Coroner’s Office have yet to provide additional comments or details regarding the ongoing investigation, as the community processes the profound loss of three cherished individuals.
This heartbreaking incident not only underscores the unpredictable nature of accidents but also the significant impact such tragedies can have on families and communities. Friends, family, and fellow students are grappling with their grief, reflecting on the lives lost and the memories created.
