In the latest episode of his podcast, Dirty Mo Media, released on May 26, Earnhardt shared the details of their final conversations, which occurred just a day before Busch’s death from complications related to severe pneumonia and sepsis. Earnhardt revealed that they were in discussions to collaborate on a racing project, with plans for Busch to race in a car associated with Earnhardt’s team.

“I was texting with him the day before he passed away about getting together this Thursday to bring his seat for his late model over to my shop,” Earnhardt explained. The collaboration was part of the Cars Tour, a notable racing series, which both drivers had expressed enthusiasm for.

Earnhardt reminisced about their discussions, noting Busch’s ambitious plans. “He wants to run the Dale Jr. 8,” Earnhardt recalled, expressing his eagerness to support the project. Busch’s excitement was evident from his message, which Earnhardt remembered as containing a “head-exploding emoji,” indicating his thrill at the idea.
The podcast episode aired shortly after Busch was commemorated during the Coca-Cola 600 race on May 24, where his family attended in a poignant display of support and remembrance. His wife, Samantha Busch, along with their children and Busch’s family members, were present for the tribute, underscoring the impact Busch had within the NASCAR community.
Reflecting on their shared history, Earnhardt described a challenging relationship between the two competitors, which spanned nearly two decades. The animosity began when Busch left Hendrick Motorsports — a team that Earnhardt also drove for — leading to intense rivalry on the track. However, the two managed to reconcile in recent years, thanks in part to a conversation initiated by Busch regarding their racing teams.
“We luckily took the time to figure out our differences, and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus,” Earnhardt shared. He expressed gratitude towards Busch for making the effort to mend their relationship, indicating that their evolving friendship brought laughter and understanding after years of rivalry.
Kyle Busch’s esteemed career in NASCAR was recognised when NASCAR president Steve O’Donnell paid tribute, emphasising Busch’s extraordinary commitment to the sport. “This was Kyle Busch’s home. Every racetrack was Kyle Busch’s home,” O’Donnell stated. He highlighted the driver’s competitive spirit, noting, “He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when in reality he had already proven everything.”
As the racing community continues to mourn the loss of Busch, tributes from fans and fellow drivers continue to pour in. Earnhardt’s heartfelt reflections on their last interactions serve as a reminder of the complexities of rivalry in sport, where animosity can often give way to respect and friendship over time.
Busch leaves behind a legacy that stretches beyond competitive accolades; his contributions to racing and the lives he touched will remain in the hearts of fans and colleagues alike. The final shared moments between Earnhardt and Busch underscore the importance of connection and reconciliation, even in the world of fierce competition.
