The incident unfolded on Wednesday, May 20, when the group of villagers from Xaisomboun province, situated around 120 kilometres north of the capital Vientiane, ventured into the cave in search of gold. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides led to flooding and blocked their exit, trapping them inside.

Bounkham Luanglath, a member of the Rescue Volunteer for People organisation, confirmed the positive news of five villagers being found alive on Wednesday, May 27. Expressing the emotional weight of the moment, he stated, “I’m still shaking. Our team made it happen,” as he informed media sources of the ongoing efforts to locate the remaining individuals.
Video footage shared on social media by the Rescue Volunteer for People depicted moments of relief and joy, as rescuers celebrated the successful recovery of the five villagers. In another clip posted by the Saithan Saphanboon Foundation, divers can be seen discovering the villagers, who were situated on a rock, awaiting assistance.
One of the divers involved in the rescue, Kengkad Bongkawong, provided insight into the immediate plans for the found villagers, indicating that they would undergo thorough physical assessments and receive liquid and gel food for nourishment. This was a crucial step to ensure their health before devising a strategy for their extraction from the cave.
Rescue operations have been complicated due to the challenging conditions within the cave. Teams have had to navigate a narrow tunnel exceeding 300 metres in length, requiring a high level of physical effort from the divers. In some instances, divers needed to remove their gear for a better fit to progress through the constricted spaces.
The involvement of experienced rescue divers, including those who previously assisted in the highly publicised rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from a submerged cave in northern Thailand in 2018, has further bolstered the operation’s efficacy. Their expertise has been invaluable in the face of the challenges posed by the location and the state of the cave.
As rescue workers maintain their efforts, the local community remains hopeful for the safe return of the two remaining villagers. The rescue operation underscores both the dangers faced by those venturing into these natural formations and the unwavering commitment of rescue teams in the region.
The unfolding situation serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the resilience of community bonds in times of distress. As rescuers continue their work, the eyes of the nation are firmly fixed on the outcome of this daring mission.
