Governor Hulusi Sahin confirmed the fatalities, stating that two of the victims died at the scene while the other two were transported to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. Reports indicate that three of the deceased were Syrian nationals, whereas one was Turkish. Additionally, one worker sustained injuries while seeking refuge in a different container; however, officials report that this individual is in stable condition.

Eyewitness footage shared by EuroNews depicts the aftermath of the tornado, showcasing twisted metal strewn across the ground as workers began to assess the extent of the damage. The storm’s ferocity also resulted in the collapse of a crane at the construction site, further underlining the devastation caused by this rare weather event.
Governor Sahin remarked on the unusual nature of the tornado, noting that there were no other reports of storms or tornadoes throughout the city of Antalya. This anomaly has raised concerns, particularly as the area is due to host the United Nations climate summit in just two weeks, scheduled for 9th to 20th November.
The Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) had issued warnings regarding heavy rainfall and the potential for tornadoes prior to the event, highlighting that such weather phenomena can occur in the region, though incidents leading to fatalities are uncommon.
While the tornado has had catastrophic consequences for the construction site, Sahin assured that no other parts of the district or city experienced significant damage. His statement emphasised the need to assess the situation effectively and support those affected by the storm’s impact.
The event has sparked discussions about the changing weather patterns in the region and their implications, particularly as Turkey grapples with the broader effects of climate change. The upcoming climate summit in Antalya will undoubtedly bring further focus on such environmental issues, as global leaders gather to discuss strategies for combating climate-related phenomena.
The tragedy has not only garnered attention across Turkey but also resonated with international audiences, who are increasingly mindful of the urgent need for action on climate change. The situation remains fluid, with local authorities continuing to investigate the incident and provide necessary support to those who have suffered losses.
