Efforts to locate 10-year-old Joshua Lahai have taken a heartbreaking turn as authorities have shifted the search into a recovery mission. Joshua disappeared after being struck by a powerful wave at Surfside Beach on the Memorial Day weekend, prompting widespread concern and collaboration among local agencies.

According to reports from the Surfside Beach Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 24. The young boy was swimming approximately 150 feet from shore along with another child, who managed to return safely while Joshua was tragically swept under the water and did not resurface.

Tim Miller, the founder of Texas EquuSearch, voiced his determination to continue the search, stating, “We’re not giving up.” During various interactions with Joshua’s family, Miller expressed his commitment to doing everything possible to find the boy. “We believe in miracles,” he added, acknowledging the overwhelming circumstances while optimistically holding out hope for a resolution.
Joshua’s brother, Peter Lahai, conveyed the family’s heartache and desire for closure. “We would at least want to have that closure of, we have a body. That’s the worst, not knowing,” he remarked, highlighting the emotional toll that uncertainty can have on family members during such tragedies.
Participating in the search efforts are several local and state agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, Parks and Wildlife officials, and the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office. Despite the ongoing search, Police Chief Philip Hester cautioned about the dangers of the beach conditions. He warned that the waters are particularly unsafe due to unpredictable deep holes that may suddenly appear, posing a significant risk to those attempting to assist in the search.
The area where Joshua disappeared has been described as hazardous, and Hester explained, “You might be in water that’s two-foot deep and then fall into a hole that’s 10-foot deep. It’s just not safe.” His statement underscores the difficult and perilous nature of ongoing recovery efforts, which are complicated by the changing conditions of the water.
As the search progressed, Joshua’s family expressed frustration regarding the beach remaining open during the operations. Speaking of the ordeal, Peter remarked, “We don’t know exactly what happened,” while stressing the importance of finding answers for their mother, who is suffering through this painful ordeal.
Described as a Black male standing 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing approximately 80 pounds, Joshua was last seen wearing multi-coloured shorts. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding his disappearance to contact the Surfside Beach Police Department or Texas EquuSearch directly.
As search teams work tirelessly amid challenging circumstances, the local community remains hopeful for a resolution to this tragic situation. The family’s yearning for closure resonates with many as they navigate this heartbreaking chapter, praying for answers and a safe return for Joshua Lahai.
