The New York Rangers paid tribute to their former star player Ron Duguay during an emotional evening at Madison Square Garden on 26th October. Duguay, who captivated hockey fans for eight seasons with the team, passed away on 22nd October after battling stage 4 cancer that originated in his colon.

Before the game against the Los Angeles Kings began, Joe Tolleson, the arena’s public address announcer, addressed the gathered crowd, sharing heartfelt memories of Ron Duguay. He reflected on Duguay’s electrifying style of play and his larger-than-life personality that endeared him to Rangers supporters. “The Rangers family mourns the passing of one of the most beloved players in franchise history,” Tolleson stated. He highlighted Duguay’s impressive achievements, including his role in leading the team to the 1979 Stanley Cup Final and his status as a 40-goal scorer.

Following these poignant remarks, the audience held a moment of silence in remembrance of Duguay, after which loud cheers erupted from the stands, showing the affection fans held for the former centre. The show of support was a testament to Duguay’s lasting legacy within the Rangers community.
Later in the evening, Duguay’s family was invited onto the ice. Among them were his daughters, Shay Thomas and Amber Stavros, his son Noah Duguay, grandchildren, and his long-time girlfriend, Sarah Palin. The atmosphere was filled with emotion, particularly for Palin, who could be seen visibly moved as the crowd celebrated Duguay’s life during a second tribute video.
Duguay’s family confirmed his passing through social media. His daughter Shay posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing profound sadness at the loss of her father who she said “fought a hard battle with cancer.” Her poignant words, “Our hearts are broken. We love you forever, Dad,” resonated with many. Sarah Palin also shared Shay’s post on her Instagram Story, stating, “It’s with a shattered heart, but also deep peace knowing Ron is with Jesus now. He fought so hard. Love never ends.”
The late hockey star’s romantic involvement with Palin began in mid-2022. Palin, who was divorced from her husband Todd after a long marriage, maintained that she and Duguay started as friends, having met through the hockey scene. Their relationship, however, was confirmed later in the year through media interviews.
Before his relationship with Palin, Duguay had two children from his first marriage to Robin Bobo and was previously married to supermodel Kim Alexis, although they divorced in 2016. Duguay’s personal life often attracted as much attention as his hockey career, distinguishing him as a prominent figure in both arenas.
Despite the emotional tributes and heartfelt remembrances, the Rangers faced a tough match against the Kings, ultimately losing 6-3. However, the night was undeniably defined by the collective grief for Duguay, whose impact extended far beyond the rink.
As fans and players alike reflected on his legacy, it became clear that Ron Duguay would remain an integral part of the Rangers’ history. The outpouring of love and support during the tribute underscored his significance to the team, their supporters, and the sport itself.
