A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Seoul, South Korea, when a section of the Seosomun Overpass collapsed during demolition work, resulting in the loss of at least three lives and leaving several others injured. The overpass has been under partial demolition since September 2025, due to concerns about its deteriorating condition.

The collapse occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time while workers were dismantling the railway section of the overpass. City officials reported that as workers were cutting through concrete slabs, a portion of the structure gave way, highlighting significant structural problems. The seismic event prompted an immediate safety inspection, but unfortunately, it was during that very inspection that another part of the structure collapsed, dropping debris on workers present at the site and on vehicles below.

According to reports, three men aged in their 50s and 60s were tragically killed in the incident, as they were among the twelve workers engaged in the demolition at the time. Three additional individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to local hospitals for treatment, as emergency services rushed to respond to the scene.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic situation as first responders searched through the rubble and debris in efforts to locate any other potential victims. The South Korean authorities moved swiftly to cordon off roads surrounding the collapsed overpass while temporarily halting some railway services to and from Seoul Station, adding to the disruption in the area.
In a statement addressing the accident, the Seoul Municipal Government indicated that they have rerouted city bus routes to alleviate further congestion resulting from the incident. The statement expressed the city’s commitment to ensuring public safety amid what has been a troubling history of structural concerns surrounding the overpass.
Originally opened in 1966, the Seosomun Overpass was constructed to alleviate traffic congestion in its vicinity. However, over the years, numerous safety reports highlighted issues, such as falling debris and other structural failures, which led to the current demolition work aimed at addressing these longstanding concerns.
Following the collapse, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung extended his condolences to the bereaved families and urged for a thorough investigation into the causes behind this grievous incident. He emphasised the need for measures that would ensure such catastrophes do not reoccur in the future.
In the wake of this tragedy, questions have arisen surrounding the adequacy of safety measures implemented during the demolition process. Stakeholders have called for an examination of protocols involved in construction and demolition to prevent any oversight that could lead to loss of life or injury.
As investigations continue, the Seoul Municipal Government has pledged to cooperate fully with all concerned parties to determine the precise cause of the collapse. More details are expected to emerge as officials sift through the debris and assess the structural integrity of remaining sections of the overpass, ensuring nothing similar happens in the future.
The Seosomun Overpass incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with construction and demolition projects, prompting renewed discussions around safety regulations within the construction industry in South Korea.
