In a heartwarming display of determination and ingenuity, Joe Luchsinger, his wife Christelle, and their five-year-old son Axel have successfully shattered the world record for the most stairs descended by a slinky. The family managed to guide their slinky down a remarkable 53 steps, surpassing the previous record of 30 stairs that had stood since 2014.

Speaking to the media, Joe shared that the journey to achieving this feat wasn’t straightforward. “We nearly gave up early on because we were struggling to get any momentum,” he recalled. The family’s first attempt at breaking the record took place at an old dam. However, they soon discovered that the stairs were too wide for their slinky to navigate, preventing it from clearing even a single step.

After several setbacks, the Luchsingers decided to try their luck at Otterbein Stadium in Westerville. This venue was discovered during a road trip to visit Joe’s parents in Columbus. With the help of the athletic director, the family secured permission to use the stadium for their record attempt on May 14, 2025. Joe emphasised the preparation involved, stating, “You need a long, uninterrupted run with no landings and just the right height-to-depth ratio.”
Before they even set their sights on the specific location, the Luchsinger family rigorously tested seven different types of slinkies to find the one best suited for the challenge. Eventually, they opted for a 6-inch rainbow slinky from Liberty Imports, which they believed would perform the best under the circumstances.
The actual attempt at the stadium took nearly two hours of trials and errors before they managed a full-length run that met the record’s requirements. Joe described the experience as both exhilarating and daunting, admitting that they almost gave up at one point due to the difficulties they faced. “Once we pushed through that wall, the long runs started coming,” he recalled, highlighting a moment of perseverance that led to their ultimate success.
Axel’s enthusiasm played a crucial role in inspiring the project. Joe noted that his son’s fascination with slinkies created the perfect opportunity to set a new challenge. “Our son Axel is at the age where everything needs to be the biggest, fastest, or most extreme version of itself,” Joe explained. After discovering the existing record, Axel’s excitement about trying to beat it became contagious, driving the family to take action.
As the family filmed their historic attempt, a moment of joy was captured when the slinky finally reached the bottom of the staircase. A video released by Guinness World Records shows the Luchsingers watching intently as the slinky flopped down the steps. Once it completed its descent, Axel enthusiastically celebrated the accomplishment with his father, sharing a high-five and joyous shouts of victory.
Guinness World Records congratulated the Luchsingers on their achievement, describing them as “Officially Amazing.” Their record-setting effort resonates beyond the numbers; it represents a family coming together, fueled by creativity and the spirit of adventure.
The Luchsingers’ journey not only showcases their commitment to having fun as a family but also highlights the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges. As they celebrate their victory, they serve as a reminder that extraordinary accomplishments can arise from even the simplest ideas, such as a classic child’s toy.
