A high school senior from Des Moines, Iowa, has experienced a remarkable journey of resilience after being involved in a devastating car accident that left him paralysed from the waist down. Brayden Harless, just a week away from his graduation, fell asleep at the wheel on 8 May, leading to a crash that would change his life forever.

Brayden’s accident occurred when he dozed off while driving, causing his vehicle to plunge into a ditch. Describing the incident, he recounted, “I dozed off at the wheel, and then I crashed, like, nose-dived first, and then my car landed on all four wheels.” Unfortunately, the crash resulted in serious spinal injuries, including a burst of the L1 vertebra and a fracture at T12, which left him unable to walk.

After the incident occurred, Brayden realised he needed to alert emergency services. In his own words, he felt divine inspiration urging him to reach for his phone. “I heard God in my head telling me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to get this phone. You’ve got to call 911, or you’re not going to walk again,’” he recalled, emphasising the gravity of his situation.
Following the accident, Brayden was admitted to MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines, where he spent more than a week in the intensive care unit. The traumatic experience meant that he would miss his high school’s in-person graduation ceremony, which left him with mixed feelings. “I wish I was there in some aspects, and in other aspects, I’m glad I wasn’t,” he reflected candidly.
Despite the challenges, hospital staff and Brayden’s family came together to organise a special graduation ceremony for him at the hospital. Diogenes Ayala, a public safety leader at MercyOne, explained that the initiative arose from a collaborative effort among staff members. “It really started from this floor and the house supervisor… we were able to project his graduation,” he explained.
Brayden was taken aback by the support he received, saying, “I didn’t realise they were giving us a whole auditorium; I thought they were just going to give us a small conference room. I was really surprised.” This heartwarming event included the presence of his family members and his teacher, who was there to present him with his diploma.
The atmosphere during the ceremony was filled with emotion, reflecting the significance of the moment for both Brayden and his loved ones. He shared, “Everybody was pretty emotional because, I mean, some of them, it was the first time they saw me after the accident.” This ceremony not only highlighted Brayden’s academic achievements but also the unwavering support he received during his ordeal.
Looking ahead, Brayden is committed to his recovery, focusing on rehabilitation and physical therapy with the hope of being able to walk again, potentially with the aid of a cane. He has expressed aspirations of pursuing a career in social work, demonstrating his desire to help others despite his challenges.
In light of Brayden’s situation, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist with medical and recovery expenses. As of now, the campaign has raised $780 towards a goal of $1,600, highlighting the community’s support during this difficult time.
Harless’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity. As he continues on his path of recovery and adaptation to his new circumstances, Brayden Harless exemplifies resilience and hope, inspiring those around him to cherish every moment.
